The Sarishabari Upazila Parishad Election, which was postponed before few hours of polling due to legal bar in Jamalpur district, will be held on Wednesday.
The voting in the upazila was scheduled on May 8 in the fourth phase.
District Election Officer and Returning Officer, Mohammad Shaniazzaman Talukdar said election commission has completed all preparations to hold the polling in a free, fair and peaceful atmosphere.
In this regard, nine magistrates, law enforcement agencies, including RAB, Police, BGB and Ansar, have been appointed to maintain law and order situation. The voting will begin at 8am through EVM and will continue till 4pm, he added.
In Sarishabari upazila, two chairman candidates -- Md Rafiqul Islam (pineapple) and Md Taleb Uddin (inkpot-pen) are contesting for the post. Besides Al Amin and Md Golam-Mostafa for vice-chairman post and Mst Zeli Aktar and Mst Mahmuda Khatun for woman vice-chairman post are contesting.
According to the election office sources, there are 2,93,918 voters in the upazila. Among them 1,46,581 are male, 1,47,336 female and one transgender will cast votes in 92 centers in
the upazila.
Earlier, the Election Commission (EC) has suspended the Sarishabari Upazila Parishad election in Jamalpur following a legal dispute over the nomination of a candidate.
EC in a letter mentioned that the chairman candidate Md Rafiqul Islam, violated the election conduct (rules 18 and 31), EC canceled his candidature according to rule No 33.
When Rafiqul Islam filed a writ against it, the High Court ordered his candidature to be upheld.
The EC then approached the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the order of the High Court. In this situation, the voting process for all posts in the Sarishabari Upazila Parishad elections had been suspended until further instructions.
