A newborn, who was one of twin girls born on Tuesday morning at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, was reportedly stolen by a woman.
The child was the daughter of Shariful Islam, a truck helper from Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia, and Shukhi Begum. The couple lives in Kalampur area of Dhamrai in the capital.
Md Bachchu Mia, chief of the DMCH Police Outpost, said that Shukhi Begum was admitted to the hospital with labour pains on Monday. Her twin daughters were born around 7am on Tuesday after surgery at the gynaecological department of the hospital.
He said they have already informed the matter to Shahbagh Police Station. The police, with the help of hospital authorities, are trying to identify the abductor by analyzing the CCTV footage, he added.
According to the grandmother of the child Hasina Begum, a woman in hijab started a conversation with her and Shariful around 1:15pm. The woman offered to hold the baby to help them. At one point, Shariful handed one of his daughters to her and went to buy medicine.
Shariful said the woman used the opportunity and left the spot with the newborn. Upon returning with medicine, he noticed that both the woman and his newborn daughter were missing.
Later, they informed the Ansar members and hospital authorities of the matter, he added.
