RAJSHAHI, June 4: City Haat, the biggest cow market in the district,  is not vibrant due to lack of customers from the outside.

At present, customers are coming thinly, but they are not making satisfactory offer prices. Rather they are waiting for last time market prices which they think will be a bit lower.

Traders said, just hearing the asking prices, customers are walking away.

A visit on Sunday (June 2) noon found huge cows at the main haat; hundreds of traders were seen standing with cows under the  hot sun; but customers presence was thin; only few customers were seen.

Customers said, cow prices are high; sellers are making no spare; maybe at the last time, the prices will come down a bit.

Sellers and farm owners said, the feed price is higher; cows have been reared for six months or one year; big amounts of money have been spent after them for feed and medicine purpose.

"So, we will have to count losses if prices are not good," they added.

A trader Montu from Niamatpur of Naogaon has come to the City Haat with five cows. He said, Bazar is dull with thin presence of customers; even no one makes offer price; hearing the asking price, they walk away.

Traders and leasee of the haat said, main customers of this haat are outside customers; they take away big cows by transports.

At present, no cow is available at less than Tk 1 lakh.

Leasee of City Haat Atikur Rahman said, "Outside traders didn come; that is why the haat did not gain momentum; we hope the haat will be vibrant from Sunday."

According to Department of Livestock Resources (DoLS)-Rajshahi, a total of 4,66,196 sacrificial animals have been prepared in Rajshahi; these include cow 83,365, buffalo 3,769, and goat 3,42,753.

District DoLS Officer Dr Julfikar Aktar Hossain said, compared to past years, this years  sacrificial animal demand is higher; this years  farming cost has been higher; so the price will be higher; and it is normal.
