A local
Jubo League leader was
beaten to death reportedly after he attempted to
rape a pregnant housewife at Chandina upazila in
Cumilla district on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night at the home of one Akkas Ali in Goramara village under Barera union of the upazila.
On Wednesday morning, police recovered the body of the victim from the scene and detained Selim Mia, the victim's husband, for questioning, confirmed Chandina Police Station officer-in-charge Ahmed Sanjur Morshed.
The deceased Tanvir Ahmed, 32, vice-president of Barera Union Jubo League, was son of Babul Bhuiyan and a resident of Ganipur village under the upazila.
The housewife claimed that Tanvir entered her room on Tuesday late night, and attempted to rape her. Her husband, Selim, intervened when he sensed the incident and during the ensuing struggle, Selim struck Tanvir on the head with a stick, resulting in Tanvir's immediate death.
Local Union Parishad (UP) Chairman, Ahsan Habib Bhuiya, expressed doubts about the incident, describing the circumstances as suspicious, questioning that how such an event could occur without neighbors noticing as the house located at a densely populated area.
Tanvir’s mother, Nilufa Begum, accused the housewife of fabricating the incident, alleging that her son was lured and murdered in a premeditated act. She demanded justice for her son's death.
Police reported that upon receiving news of the murder, they visited Goramara village and recovered Tanvir's body. The area is densely populated, yet locals remain silent about the event.
Tanvir had several cases pending against him, including weapons charges, they said.
OC Ahmed Sanjur Morshed said that Tanvir’s body was sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy and the detained person is currently being interrogated.
The police are investigating the matter and further details will be revealed following the completion of the investigation, he said.
Legal proceedings are underway, added the OC.
This incident has sparked widespread concern and discussions about safety and justice in the local community.
