BCL activist shot to death in B'baria

A violent clash and bullet exchange incident leaves an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) dead in Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila on Wednesday evening.

The conflict erupted during a rally at College para area of the municipality where supporters of Shahadat Hossain Shovon, a candidate for the chairman post with the Pineapple symbol, claimed victory.
The victim Ayash Rahman Ejaz, an activist of BCL Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila unit, was son of Aminul Islam and a resident of the aforesaid area.

Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Md Aslam Hossain confirmed the death resulting from the clash.

According to locals, two election camps were set up at the area in support of Shahadat Hossain Shovon, the general secretary of the district Chhatra League and a candidate with the Pineapple symbol. Since then, Tensions had been simmering between the two groups.

Following the vote count, around 6:30 PM, a group of supporters held a celebratory rally claiming Shovon's victory. During this rally, a group led by former VP of Brahmanbaria Government College, Jalal Hossain, known as Khoka, arrived on several motorcycles. One of the motorcycle riders fired bullets at the rally, leaving Ejaz critically injured.

He was rushed to Brahmanbaria General Hospital and was being transferred to Dhaka, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

Chairman candidate Shahadat Hossain Shovon said, "This incident did not happen because of my election. There were pre-existing issues between them. However, they were supporters of the Pineapple symbol."

OC Md. Aslam Hossain said that no arrests have been made yet, but local weapons were recovered from the scene.

Legal actions will be taken after investigation, added the OC.
