Bangladesh has played in the finals of multinational tournaments seven times in red-ball cricket, but their cabinet holds only a tri-series trophy. Veteran cricketer Mahmudullah Riyad believes that fate didn favour them in clinching titles.

"Opportunities are always there; we never lack in efforts. Winning a trophy, I think, requires a bit of luck," Mahmudullah said in a video posted by the BCB on its social media wall on Wednesday. "We came very close in a few events. Unfortunately, we couldn make it happen."

"We have a chance in this World Cup. Support us and we will do everything possible in the World Cup," he urged his countrymen.
Bangladesh is in Group D in the World Cup.

The top two teams from the five-team group will advance to the next round. With teams like South Africa and Sri Lanka in this group, progressing to the next round is tough. Moreover, teams like the Netherlands are also ready to challenge.

Bangladesh will play their first match in the ongoing World Cup against Sri Lanka on Saturday. Mahmudullah believes that if they can perform well in that match, they will gain the motivation to achieve big things.

"It is difficult to predict in T20 cricket! It could be any teams game on any given day. Our preparation is good and we are doing well. It depends on how we start. If we start well, we will go far," Mahmudullah expressed his belief.

Mahmudullah played in all the World Cups from 2007 to 2021 but was not a part of the T20 World Cup 2022 team due to poor performances. Reflecting on this, he said, "It felt very bad not to be in the 2022 World Cup team. I felt like I could be in the team. But I wasn there for no reason. I have no regrets about that."

Najmul Hossain Shanto is the new captain of Bangladesh across all formats and will lead the Tigers in a World Cup for the first time.

Mahmudullah praised Shanto highly as a captain and believes that he needs time to bring something good for the country.

"He is a very good leader. He is a very good captain, with excellent game sense and awareness. All we need to give him time. He will bring something good for Bangladesh with his leadership quality," Mahmudullah explained.
