Remal  impact: Tk 155cr damage estimated in Patuakhali, Pirojpur

Primarily, irrecoverable damages to coastal localities including houses, crops, trees and plants, embankments, fish enclosures, animals and forests were recorded in several districts of the country including Patuakhali and Pirojpur.
PATUAKHALI: According to a primary estimate, the damage cost stands at over Tk 150 crore in the district.
The exact damage cost will be more, sources in the district administration said.
District Disaster and Relief Officer Sunam Debnath said, most damages have been in Kalapara and Rangabali upazilas of the district; three people were killed; household-crop damage cost stands at over Tk 100 crore.
In the district, 84,500 families, having 38,000 people, were directly affected, he added.
He further said, 6,082 houses were completely damaged while 31,694 ones partially damaged; 75,040 hectares (ha) of croplands were damaged; 29,240 animals were destroyed;  about 24 kilomtre embankments were broken; 14,928 fish enclosures and ponds were washed away; and  361 ha of forests were destroyed.
Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board (WDB)-Patuakhali Md Arif Hasan said, in two divisions of the WDB a total of 24-km embankment got breached
Primarily, the damage cost has been estimated at Tk 20 crore, he added.
He further said, if the embankment is not repaired before start of the next rainy season, the damage cost will go up.
District Senior Fisheries Officer Md Kamrul Islam said, 14,928 fish enclosures and ponds were damaged, making an estimated damage cost of about Tk 30 crore.
This damage excludes damages of fishing boats and nets, he added. If these are added, then the total damage cost will increase, he added.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Noor Kutubul Alam said, according to lists and estimates of damages from different departments, the primary damage cost will be about Tk 84.57 crore; beyond this, 38,000 houses were completely and partially damaged; if the financial damages are estimated, the damage costs will stand at Tk 50 crore.
In that account, the total damage cost including fisheries, crops, animals and dams will exceed Tk 150 crore, the DC maintained.
PIROJPUR: The losses and damages that were caused by Cyclone Remal in the district have primarily been estimated to be more than Taka five crore.
This information was disclosed by DC Mohammad Jahedur Rahman  to journalists recently at his office.
Compared to other cyclonic damages in the district, the damages by Remal have been the highest, he added.
The damages included 7,886 hectare crop lands, 10,800 tonnes of enclosures and ponds, 1,500 houses fully and 5,800 houses partly damaged.
According to District Relief and Rehabilitation Office sources, about 22-hour-long non-stop cyclone and heavy rainfall swelled the water level highly, causing irrecoverable damages.  
"Primarily, we assume the total cost of losses and damages may be more than Tk 5 crore," the DC said.
Civil Surgeon Dr Md Mizanur Rahman said, at least, seven people died including child, woman, youth and old man; of them three were in Bhandaria Upazila and two each in Pirojpur Sadar and Indurkajni upazilas.  
All government departments are assessing their actual damages as per the government directions, the DC added.
 Food assistance programmes from government, private and non- government organisations are going on, he added.
He further said, "We are planning to provide more cash and massive rehabilitation as soon as possible."
 Repairing damaged highways, rural roads and dams, and disrupted electricity supply in village areas is given the highest priority, the DC maintained.
