Literary enthusiasts always have the fascination of a bookstore or a room full of world literature. Not only reading books give us pleasure but also storing them (as books are full of characters) and reading again the same books once in a while gives pleasure indescribable. Full of books, precisely world literature books, Bookworm is warm enough for reading addicts.
Rafiqul Haque Nantu, one of the partners of Bookworm, also a freedom fighter from sector 2, fought to make the country free from the enemies, believes that books and only books can make a nation free from the ignorance and superstitions and thus freedom become sustainable.
Late Captain Taher Kuddus, a regular writer of Holiday newspaper, started the bookstore Bookworm in 1995 at Jahangir Gate, Dhaka. His unconditional love for reading books makes him open this bookstore which is now running by Ariz Haque, Manager Md Badrul, Amena Rahman: daughter-in-law of Captain Taher along with Rafiqul Haque Nantu.
Rafiqul Haque always keeps in mind the ratio of readers who buy books from the store. "Students of English Medium schools read more literary books then the students of Bangla medium, apparently; because they have literature in the syllabus."
"Literature is very important to make a nation strong and to build a well-educated nation. But day by day the ratio is decreasing which is very unfortunate for us, as a nation," he says about his disappointment.
To encourage the young generation Rafiqul Haque firmly believes, "We need more festivals like Dhaka Lit Fest and Ekushey Book Fair." He also emphasizes on the promotion of the books and book reading sessions in groups.
"Importance of reading circles should be understood by the parents first. As parents play the most important role in child's upbringing," adds Rafiqul.
He also sighs remembering the incidents of religious fanaticism in our country done by the youth, "If they had habit of reading books and literature, scenario would be different."
"Encouraging our children to read books, precisely those books which have epigrammatic humour and secular messages, would help our young people perceive the knowledge of being humanitarian," says Rafiqul.
In his words, the role of parents is inevitable. To become better human being children need to know about their own culture along with others. "Not knowing the culture is nothing to be proud of. Knowing and belonging own culture is something to be proud of."
Keeping all these in mind, Bookworm always encourages young writer's books and children's books in the bookstore. And with that, Bookworm has very enriched collection of world literature for children.
Bookworm has heavenly collection of Penguin Books, Fingerprint Publishing, Rupa Publications, Bloomsbury Publishing, Aleph Book Company, and what not. To enrich the list and to encourage young book readers and writers recently Bookworm is planning to add Bangla Literature.
Rafiq concludes with the hope that young generation will read more and more books. And with this as a freedom fighter he will breathe serenity in a more humanitarian country.
