Bangladeshs Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, has been unanimously elected as the Chair of the Second Committee of the United Nations General Assembly for the upcoming 79th Session.
"This election reflects Bangladeshs remarkable success in sustainable development under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and demonstrates the trust and confidence that the international community places in Bangladesh," said Ambassador Muhith in his address to the General Assembly following his election. The elections took place on Friday at the UN Headquarters in New York, as reported by the Foreign Ministry.
Ambassador Muhith emphasized that Bangladeshs leadership role in the Second Committee allows the country to significantly shape global policies and initiatives. "Our position facilitates meaningful contributions to global discussions and helps advance our national interests and development goals on the world stage," he stated.
The Second Committee is one of the most vital bodies of the United Nations, focusing on economic, financial, and environmental issues. Its scope includes macroeconomic policy, international trade and development, poverty eradication, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, climate change, UN operational activities, South-South Cooperation, challenges faced by specific countries, agricultural development, food security, and the use of information and communication technologies for development.
Ambassador Muhith, a seasoned diplomat, has served as Bangladeshs Permanent Representative to the UN since July 2022. He is also the President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS for 2024, overseeing three of the UNs most significant agencies.
In his distinguished career, Ambassador Muhith has held several key positions, including Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in 2022, Vice-Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission in 2023, President of the Executive Board of UN-Women, and Vice-President of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS, according to the Foreign Ministry.
