A bus driver and a autorickshaw driver were arrested on Friday night reportedly for raping a youth girl at Durgapur upazila in
Netrakona district.
The arrested individuals are bus driver Khairul Islam, 30, from Atkapara village, and auto-rickshaw driver Md. Kabir Mia, 35, from Balikandi village in the upazila. Khairul Islam used to drive bus No. 7 of 'Mamoni Paribahan' on the Dhaka-Durgapur-Lengura route while Kabir used to drive autorickshaw in local routes.
According to the case statement, the victim, 21, boarded on a Mamoni Paribahan bus from North Badda area in the capital around 9:30 PM on Thursday, intending to go her home in Kalmakanda upazila in Netrakona district.
Around 3am of the night, the bus helper dropped her off at Press Club Mor in Durgapur upazila sadar, where bus driver Khairul also got off from his vehicle.
When the victim was seeking for a transport to go her uncle's house in West Nazirpur to take shelter in the midnight, the bus driver Khairul offered her a ride in an auto-rickshaw, saying that he will help to reach her at the destination.
During the journey, the bus driver, with the help of the auto-rickshaw driver Kabir Mia, threatened the girl and forcibly violated her. They then, dropped her off near her uncle's house and fled, taking her mobile phone and bag.
Later, with the help of locals, the victim filed a
rape case with Durgapur Police Station on Friday morning.
By the afternoon, the police had apprehended Khairul and Kabir later that night.
Durgapur Police Station officer-in-charge Uttam Chandra Dev stated that they arrested the bus driver upon receiving the initial complaint.
Subsequently, based on the victim's description, police identified and arrested the auto-rickshaw driver and seized the auto-rickshaw, said the OC.
The two arrested individuals were sent to court on Saturday (June 8), he said.
A rape case was filed and investigation is underway in this regard, added the OC.
