A
police constable was
shot dead by another policeman near the Palestinian embassy in the capital's Baridhara area on Saturday night while performing their duties there.
The incident took place around 11:45pm.
The deceased was identified as Monirul.
Two others also sustained bullet injuries as the policeman opened fire indiscriminately.
Both the policemen were on duty in front of the embassy, said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun around 2:30am on Sunday, after visiting the spot.
Police detained constable Kawsar Ahmed following the shooting incident. The area was, later, condoned off, he added.
Gulshan Police Station OC Mazharul Islam said that injured one who was passing through the area on a bicycle also sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. And another injured has been identified as Sazzad, who works as a driver for an embassy. Sazzad is now undergoing treatment at United Hospital.
Eyewitness a journalist, who was passing the road at that time, said "On our way home from work, we saw a policeman lying on the road near the Palestinian embassy. His body bore several bullet injuries. And another policeman beside the body was standing with a gun."
OC Mazharul Islam said, "One constable might have shot another constable due to mental problem."
"Police recovered four to five rounds of bullet casings from the spot. We are investigating the incident. If necessary, legal action will be taken," IGP Abdullah Al-Mamun said.
