Students of different universities across the country, including Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University (JU), are staging demonstrations on Sunday to protest against the High Court’s verdict to restore the quota system in two grades in government jobs.

On June 5, after the final hearing of a writ petition filed in this regard, the High Court bench of Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Khizir Hayat declared illegal the government decision that cancelled the 30 per cent quota system for the freedom fighters' children in the civil service of ninth to 13th grades in 2018.

In Dhaka University: At least 2,000 students staged demonstration on the campus. They brought out a procession from the front gate of the Central Library at around 11am and concluded at the Raju Sculpture.
Marching through the campus, the protesters shouted slogans demanding the cancelation of the quota system in government jobs.

The protesting students said that the decision to reintroduce the quota system in government jobs has destroyed the hopes and dreams of students who aspire to advance the country with their talent.

They called for a fair process that offers equal opportunity to all job seekers and also issued an ultimatum, demanding that the decision be reversed by June 30, warning that the movement would spread from campuses to the streets if the demand is not met.

Meanwhile, on October 4, 2018, in the face of a student movement, the government issued a circular cancelling the 10 per cent women quota, the 30 per cent freedom fighter quota and the 10 per cent district quota for government jobs.

In Barishal: More than 500 students from Barishal University (BU) blockaded on the Dhaka-Barisal Highway from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm on Sunday, protesting the High Court order on reinstating discriminatory quota system in government jobs.

They also stage demonstrations on the highway disrupting traffic and causing suffering to passengers.

After the blockade, the students brought out a protest procession on the highway. Later, the students held a protest rally in front of the administrative building.

Simultaneously, protests were also held at Chittagong University (CU), Rajshahi University (RU), Jahangirnagar University (JU), and Jagannath University (JnU).
