Soil lifting from cropland rampant at Durgapur

NETRAKONA, June 9: In hectic manner, surface soil lifting from cultivable lands is taking place in Durgapur Upazila of the district.
Fleeing the administrative sight, excavator-based soil cutting from croplands is going on round the clock. Excavated soil is being sent to different areas of the country by drum trucks and banned tractors for sales.
Along with the croplands, village roads are also getting damaged due to desperate movement of such vehicles.
After being informed of reckless excavation of the surface soil from croplands in Thakurbari Kanda area at Durgapur Sadar Union recently, Assistant Commissioner (AC-Land) and Executive Magistrate Md Mostafizur Rahman started to rush to the spot; but sensing his rushing, the soil lifting syndicate managed to flee; yet he could have seized two tractors and released air pressure of about 10      tractors.
In the wake of legal complexities, five Balumahal of the Sumeshwari River have been closed since April 14. Centring these Balumahal, soil businesses of thousands of crore of Taka had been taking place; but their sudden suspension made the soil lifting and trading group utmost desperate.
They managed to excavate soil secretly from croplands.
Earlier on May 25, one man was fined Taka one lakh on charge of lifting soil from cropland in Shimultali area.
AC-Land Md Mostafizur Rahman said, "At the time of campaign, none of the sand lifter is found; two tractors have been seized; after finding the owners, necessary measures will be taken; and lifting soil from cropland is illegal.
"If we get sand lifting information, instant legal action will be taken," the AC-land added.
