Lightning kills seven in five districts

Seven people including three women and two minor girls were killed by lightning strikes in separate incidents in five districts - Thakurgaon, Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Dinajpur and Natore, on Friday.
THAKURGAON: A woman was killed by lightning strike in Pirganj Upazila of the district on Friday evening.
The deceased was identified as Lipi Aktar, 36, wife of Firoz Zaman, a resident of Ronshia Village under the upazila.
Local sources said that Lipi Aktar was struck by lightning in the evening while she went to bring her clothes amid storms and rain. She was critically injured at that time.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Thakurgaon Adhunik Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pirganj Police Station (PS) Khairul Alam Don confirmed the incident, adding that the body was handed over to the deceaseds family after completing an autopsy on Saturday afternoon.
CHAPAINAWABGANJ: A woman and two minor girls were killed after being struck by lightning in separate incidents in Shibganj and Bholahat upazilas of the district on Friday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Amena Khatun, 9, daughter of Eslam Ali, a resident of Barogachi Village under Jambaria Union in Bholahat Upazila; and Kabita Khatun, 11, daughter of Rakibul Islam of South Paka Masterbari area under Paka Union, and Boby Bakt, 35, wife of Subhas Bakt of Alidanga Village in Shibganj Upazila.
Quoting the deceaseds family members, Shibganj PS OC Sajjad Hossain said Boby was struck by a streak of lightning when she was working in front of her house. She died on the spot.
Meanwhile, a thunderbolt struck on Kabita while she was bathing amid rainfall. She also died on the spot, the OC added.
On the other hand, Amena was collecting mangoes which were fallen down the ground amid heavy rainfall in the area when a lightning struck her, leaving her unconscious.
She was then rescued and taken to Bholahat Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physicians declared her dead.
Bholahat PS OC Sumon Kumar confirmed the incident.
MANDA, NAOGAON: A farmer was killed by lightning strike in Manda Upazila of the district on Friday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Shamsul Alam, 34, son of Moinuddin, a resident of Volam Village in the upazila.
Local sources said that Shamsul Alam was struck by a streak of lightning in the afternoon while he was working in a paddy field amid rain, which left him dead on the spot.
Manda PS OC Mozammel Haque confirmed the incident.
NAWABGANJ, DINAJPUR: A college student was killed by lightning strike in Nawabganj Upazila of the district on Friday afternoon.
The incident took place in Lalghat Bazar area under the upazila at around 3 pm.
The deceased was identified as Juwel Rana, 19, son of Golzar Hossain, a resident of Damail Sarker Para Village under Kushadah Union in the upazila.  
Local Union Parishad (UP) Member Goffar Ali said Juwel was drying paddy on a road near Lalghat Bazar at around 3 pm. At one stage, thunderbolt struck him all of a sudden. He was critically injured at that time.
Locals then rescued him, but he died on the way to Nawabganj Upazila Health Complex.
Nawabganj PS Inspector (Investigation) Mominuzzaman confirmed the incident.
GURUDASPUR, NATORE: A woman was killed after being struck by lightning in Gurudaspur Upazila of the district on Friday noon.
The deceased was identified as Abera Begum, 40, wife of Saddam Hossain, a resident of Ananda Nagar Mohalla under Gurudaspur Municipality.
It was known that Abera was struck by lightning while she was bringing her duck from a nearby water body during the rain at around 2:30 pm, which left her critically injured.
She was then rescued and rushed to Gurudaspur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor pronounced her dead, said Fazlur Rahman, councillor of Ward No. 9.
Dr Soiti Munsi, physician of the health complex, said the relatives brought the housewife here, but she had already died before.
