Narayanganj court on Monday sentenced two members of the banned militant organization Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (
JMB) to life imprisonment.
Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman Bhuiyan, the judge of Narayanganj Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court, delivered the verdict in presence of the convicts.
Additionally, each of the convicts has been fined Tk 50,000, in defaultm, the will have to serve more one year in the jail.
The convicted individuals are Md. Tanvir alias Mehdi alias Abir alias Mushfiq, 46, from Bandargachia area in Barguna, and Md. Zahurul Islam alias Zahid alias Badol, 43, from Mahiganj area under Rangpur's Kotwali.
Md. Abdur Rashid, an inspector of the court, confirmed the matter stating that the court sentenced the accused to life term imprisonment in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act for planning and executing violent incidents and various subversive activities filed with Rupganj Police Station.
Quoting the court prosecution, Additional Public Prosecutor Adv Beauty Akhtar said that on the night of October 25, 2009, members of RAB-11 learned that JMB members were stationed in Ariabo area under Rangpur's Rupganj upazila to plan subversive activities and violent incidents.
Tipped-off, a team of the elite force conducted a raid and arrested the two individuals. During interrogation, RAB members discovered that they were serving as Shura members of JMB. Tanvir was identified as the chief planner and leader in implementing various subversive activities, while Zahurul Islam was responsible for overseeing operations in Narayanganj and other areas, she said.
A case was filed with Rupganj Police Station following the incident, and based on the testimony of 12 witnesses, the court delivered the verdict on Monday (June 10).
