A woman succumbed to her injuries five days after being set on
fire by her husband at Muksudpur upazila in
Gopalganj district on Monday.
Helena Akter, 36, passed away at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Monday morning.
The tragic incident occurred late at night on June 6 in Dumuria village under Gohala Union of the upazila.
Helena's 11-year-old son, Antar, also suffered severe burns and remains in critical condition at the same hospital.
The victim's brother, Imran, said that Helena had been married to Osman Sheikh of Dumuria village for 14 years. Throughout their marriage, she was subjected to repeated physical abuse. Due to her husband's addiction issues, Helena often stayed at her parental home.
On the night of the incident, Helena and her son were asleep when Osman threw petrol through the window and set them on fire before fleeing the scene.
Locals rushed to their screams, rescued them and took the victims to nearby Rajair Hospital. They were subsequently transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital and then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Muksudpur Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Ashraful Alam confirmed the death said that legal procedures would be followed to hand over the body to the family.
A case has been filed in this regard and efforts are on to arrest the accused, added the OC.
