There have areas to improvement in ICC events umpiring

Bangladesh lost their second match by four runs to South Africa in the T20 World Cup in New York on Tuesday. Bangladeshi batsman Tawhid Hridoy raised concerns about the umpire decisions after the loss, claiming that his controversial dismissal led to their defeat.

The on-field umpires made at least four decisions against Bangladesh during the match. In the second ball of the 17th over, while flicking Protea pacer Ottniel Baartman, the ball hit Mahmudullahs leg and went over the boundary. Field umpire Sam Nogajski gave him out following a half-hearted appeal from the South African fielders. The decision was overturned on review, but the four runs were not added as it was deemed a dead ball. In the following over, umpire Richard Illingworth gave Hridoy out, even though the ball only slightly touched the top of the leg stump. The umpires also didn call a couple of wides.

"To be honest, it was not a good decision. It didn bode well for us in a tight match. If we had those four runs, the outcome of the match could have been different. Nothing more to say," Hridoy said during the post-match press conference on Tuesday.

"The umpire made the call and he can make it. They are human too and can make mistakes. But there were also two wides that were not called. Playing at a venue like this, where there are few runs and low-scoring matches, even a run or two is a big deal. Those four runs or two wides were very close calls. Even my dismissal was the umpires call. I think there is room for improvement in these areas. We have no control over the rules that the ICC has made," he regretted.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan both threw away their wickets to bouncy deliveries, attempting upper cuts. Did these dismissals cost the match? Hridoy didn want to blame Shakib and Shanto, instead he took responsibility for his own wicket leading to the loss. He said, "We lost the match after I got out. If I had stayed till the end, we would not have lost the match. Shanto and Shakib got out earlier. I was there until the end. I felt that I could have won todays game."

Can Bangladesh make it to the Super Eight? To this question, Hridoy said, "I think we are a team that can play not only in the Super Eight, but also in the semi-finals and finals."

Hridoy hopes that after the recent batting failures, the batsmen will bounce back soon. "Our batters are not getting runs. In every match, not everyone in the team will score, but one or two players need to step up. In this shorter format, those two or three who play well should finish the game that day. Our batters are not scoring runs but I am sure they will in future matches. Hopefully, we will turn things around soon."
