BOGURA, June 11: More than 100 families of Shimultair Village in Shariakandi Upazila of the district are passing sleepless nights due to erosion panic.

According to local sources, with recession of water level in the Jamuna River, erosions have appeared in different areas including Shimultair in the upazila.

At present, Shimultair Government Primary School has been under the erosion threat. After being failed to protect the school, the upazila administration sold its infrastructure through auction.

Already about one kilometre stretch of Shimultair has been devoured by the river.

Erosions also appeared in 30 metre area at Kornibari at Sariakandi and in 40 metre area in Dhunot Upazila in the last year.

Later on, these areas were repaired, said Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Water Development Board (WDB) Humayun Kabir.

But Shimultair area of Chaluabari Union has been in very risky condition as the area is in the middle of char, he added.

Attempt is going on to prevent the erosion, the WDB official maintained.

The Jamuna River water was continuing to swell for the last few days at Sariakandi. But since Saturday, the water level is coming down.

On Sunday morning, the erosion started beside Shimultair Primary School.

In the last year, deadly erosion appeared at the same point. Then the eroded area was inspected instantly by Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam.

Under the supervision of the WDB, geo bags were dumped, which prevented the erosion a bit.

But the erosion appeared again on Sunday noon.

Now the only Ashrayan Project in that village is set to be eroded.

WDB Sub-Divisional Engineer Humayun Kabir said, "We are trying to protect the school at the allocation capacity. It needs a big budget.

A proposal of allocation has been sent for protecting the school and locals. If allocation is granted, the repairing will start soon."
