Court orders to attach more assets of Benazir

A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered authorities concerned to attach more properties of former IGP Benazir Ahmed and his family members in three districts in connection with corruption allegations against them.

Anti-Corruption Commi-ssion Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir confirmed the matter to the Daily Observer on Wednes-day night.

The properties are 24 kathas of land at Rupganj of Narayanganj, three kathas of land at Dhakas Uttara area, two flats measuring 3,075 square feet at Badda, 25 acres of land at Bandarban and six storied building at Adabor of Dhaka, Citizen Television Ltd and shares of Tigerafit Apparels Ltd.

Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judges Court of Dhaka passed the order following a ACC prayer.

Earlier, On May 23, the same court ordered to attach former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and his family members 621 bighas of land in Gopalganj and Madaripur and four flats in the capitals upscale Gulshan area and freeze shares of 19 companies.

Three days after the same court also ordered the freezing of savings certificates of Tk 3 million, 33 accounts in various banks and three BO (beneficiary owners) accounts. Recently allegations have been raised against Benazir Ahmed and his family members, saying that they gathered a huge amount of assets through corruption and irregularities.

Benazir joined the police force as an assistant superintendent of police in February 1988.

In April 2020, he was promoted to the post of IGP after serving as commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and director general of the Rapid Action Battalion.

On December 10, 2021, the United States declared the then IGP Benazir ineligible to enter the country for gross violations of human rights while serving as RAB director general.
