Gas Babu confesses to his involvement in MP Anar abduction, sent to jail

Jhenaidah Awami League leader Kazi Kamal Ahmed alias Gas Babu,   gave confessional statement before a Metropolitan Magistrate on Friday  under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc)  in a case filed over the abduction of Jhenaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar for murder.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim recorded the statement of  Gas Babu, the Relief and Social Welfare Affairs Secretary of Jhenaidah AL.

Later the court sent him to jail.

With accused Gas Babu, a total of four accused namely Shimul Bhuiyan, Tanvir Bhuiyan, and Celesty Rahman out of arrested five accused in Bangladesh confessed their crime in the high profile murder case.

 Another accused Saidul Karim Mintu, General Secretary of Jhenaidah district Awami League is now in police custody to face police interrogation.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Detective Branch of Police and also the Investigation Officer of the case produced the accused Gas Babu before the court with a prayer to record confessional statement.  Gas Babu confessed that he was involved in MP Anar murder planning, picture and money transaction incident, said a police source.

Main accused Shimul Bhuiyan who earlier gave confessional statement and now Gas Babu were involved in MP Anars abduction through enticement and subsequent murder in Kolkata.

The accused Shimul Bhuiyan came to Bangladesh from Kolkata on May 15 and Shimul communicated with Gas Babu through Whatsapps on May 16.  As per  whatsapps communication, in a pre-planned way Shimul and Gas Babu met secretly inside Shimuls car on the road side of  Banga Expressway under  Banga Upazila in Faridpur district and the accused showed MP Anars nude dead body and transferred those to Gas Babus  mobile phone. Later Shimul demanded a big amount of money in exchange of pictures of abduction and murder incident of MP Anar.  Gas Babu assured Shimul to pay a partial amount of money on May 23. In the meantime Shimul was arrested. Another Awami League leader Saidul Karim Mintu who is now in police custody also committed to pay the entire amount of money to Shimul through Gas Babu in exchange of documentary evidences of the dead body of MP Anar.
 
On June 7, detectives picked up Kamal from the Adarshapara area in Jhenaidah in connection with the case. Later he was placed on a seven-day remand.

Anwarul Azim Anar, a lawmaker from the ruling Awami League, crossed the Darshana-Gede border into India for treatment on May 12. He stayed at his friend Gopal Biswass home in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

The following day, he left to see a doctor at around noon and was expected to return in the evening. However, a WhatsApp message from his phone to Biswas said that he had gone to Delhi instead and would call him if necessary.

Since then, he could not be reached by phone. Eventually, the Bangladesh government confirmed his death on May 22, citing Indian police.

Anar was a three-time MP and also President of Kaliganj upazila unit Awami League.
