The administrations of Companiganj and Gowainghat upazilas of Sylhet on Tuesday decided to close all tourist spots indefinitely due to continuous rain and flash floods.

With the announcement, tourists will not be allowed to visit popular spots-- Jaflong, Bichhanakandi, Ratargul, Panthumai in Gowainghat, and Bholaganj Sada Pathor and Utma Chhara in Companiganj.

Gowainghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Towhidul Islam said as the flood situation has worsened in the upazila, tourist centres have been shut for the public interest and to ensure public safety.
Companiganj UNO Sunjit Kumar said the tourist destinations will remain closed until further notice.

Meanwhile, Sylhet City Corporation Public Relations Officer Sajlu Laskar said all leave for SCC officials and employees had been cancelled.

Due to continuous rainfall and flash floods from upstream, the water level of the Surma River has risen and submerged various areas of Sylhet city.
