Three lakh saplings being planted in Panchagarh

PANCHAGARH, June 21: Three lakh saplings of 66 species of different trees are being planted in three upazilas of the district, initiated by local MP (Panchagarh-1) Naimuzzaman Bhuiyan Mukta.

The saplings are being planted in Sadar Upazila, Tentulia and Atwari upazilas.

The tree plantation was inaugurated by the MP under a month-long tree plantation programme by planting a sapling of a blackberry at Muktanchal Park on the Chawai River bank at Amarkhana Union in Sadar Upazila on June 15.

Later on, sapling planting along the river bank and nearby areas started in full swing.

Deputy Commissioner Zahurul Islam, MPs wife major (Rtd) Kazi Moushumi, Senior Director of BRAC Head Office KAM Morshed, Associate Director Abdus Salam, Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension and Agriculturist Abdul Matin, Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman AS Md Shahnewaz Pradhan Shubo, and Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zakir Hossain along with government officials, public representatives, teachers, students were present at the opening function.

MP Naimuzzaman Bhuian Mukta said, the tree plantation programme has been initiated to protect biodiversity from adverse effects of climate change, prevent desertification, and attract people to tourism, protect people from disasters and save life of nature in 23 unions and one municipality in three upazilas of Panchagarh-1 Constituency.

Under this programme, 300,000 saplings of 66 species are being planted, he added.

Sapling plantation is also going on at the Mahananda Park on the bank of the Mahananda River in Tentulia and Atwari Sadar upazilas.

All educational institutions, public and private offices, courts, shelter projects, roads and highways of the three upazilas will be brought under the tree plantation programme, the MP maintained.

He furrther said, these tree saplings will be reared and managed with organic fertiliser, pesticide, fencing, and bamboo stakes.

This programme will continue yearly, he said again.

Prizes will be given to those organizations or individuals who can plant trees and protect them in the next year, he added.

Already, 2,100 saplings of seven species have been handed over to upazila nirbahi officers of the three upazilas for planting on behalf of BRAC.
