COXS BAZAR, June 21: A young man and his pregnant wife were killed in a landslide at Badshaghona in the district early Friday.
The accident took place at around 3:30 am in Badshaghona-Khajamanzil area under Coxs Bazar Municipality.
The deceased were identified as Hafez Anwar Hossain, 23, and his seven-month pregnant wife Maymuna Akter, 18. Anwar was the muezzin of a local mosque.
Locals said heavy rain started at around 3 am. At that time, suddenly the hill near Anwars house collapsed and fell on their house and buried the sleeping husband-wife.
Hearing the scream of Anwars mother and sister, who were in the other room, the surrounding people came forward.
They removed the soil and rescued Anwar and his wife, and quickly took them to Coxs Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the emergency department doctor declared the couple dead.
Residential Medical Officer of Coxs Bazar Sadar Hospital Dr Ashikur Rahman said that the two had died before being taken to the hospital.
