Poor game plan, poorer form result in Bangladeshs woe against India

Bangladeshs chances of advancing to the knockout stages have significantly diminished after back-to-back losses to Australia and India in the Super-8 matches of the ICC Mens T20 World Cup.

Their perplexing game plan against India at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium in Antigua on Saturday left many cricket experts baffled.

Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and surprisingly opted to bowl first on a batting-friendly track. Rohit Sharma expressed his satisfaction with the decision, as it aligned with Indias preferred strategy.

Another surprising move was Bangladeshs decision to drop a pacer against a formidable subcontinent side known for handling spin well.

Instead of fielding four pacers and two spinners, Bangladesh chose two pacers and three spinners, a strategy that allowed India to post a substantial total.

Bangladesh started their bowling attack with two spinners from both ends, which enabled India to establish a solid foundation.

Rohit and Virat Kohli put on 39 runs for the opening partnership in just 3.4 overs. Rohit scored 23 runs off 11 balls, Kohli added 37 off 28, Rishabh Pant contributed 36 off 24, Suryakumar Yadav hit six off two, Shivam Dube added 34 off 24 and Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten with 50 off 27 balls, leading India to a total of 196 runs for five wickets.

Tanzim Sakib and Rishad Hossain claimed two wickets each for Bangladesh, while Shakib Al Hasan took the remaining wicket.

Chasing a target of 197 runs, Bangladeshs body language suggested a lack of intent to win. Liton Das threw his wicket away with a poor shot scoring 13 off 10 balls, while his opening partner Tanzid Tamim managed 29 off 31 balls. Shanto finally found some form, scoring 40 off 32 balls.

However, Tawhid Hridoy (4), Shakib (11), Mahmudullah (13) and Jaker Ali (1) failed to contribute in teams need as Rishads cameo of 24 off 10 balls merely narrowed the margin. Bangladesh therefore, finished on 146 runs for eight wickets.

Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets for India, while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh each claimed two wickets, with Hardik taking the rest.

Afghanistans victory over Australia by 21 runs in the following morning has kept a slim hope alive for Bangladesh. For Bangladesh to reach the semifinals, they would need a massive win against Afghanistan coupled with Indias substantial victory over Australia.
