Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman was adorned with the new rank badge of General in the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban here this morning.
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan and Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan adorned the Army Chief with the rank badge of General.
Prime Ministers Deputy Press Secretary KM Shakhawat Moon confirmed the matter to media.
After the ceremony, he said, the premier congratulated the new Army Chief by presenting a bouquet and wished him success.
The Army Chief also greeted the Prime Minister by presenting a bouquet and sought her blessing.
Prime Ministers Security Affairs Adviser Major General (rtd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, Prime Ministers Principal Secretary Md Tofazzel Hossain Miah, Principal Staff Officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division, Lieutenant General Mizanur Rahman Shameem, Defense Secretary Md Ashraf Uddin, Prime Ministers Press Secretary Md Nayeemul Islam Khan, among others, were present. General Waker-Uz-Zaman replaced General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman officially assumed office as the Army Chief of Bangladesh on Sunday. His tenure as Army Chief will last for the next three years, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
General Waker-Uz-Zaman succeeds General S M Shafiuddin Ahmed, who served as the 17th Chief of Army Staff from June 24, 2021, completing his tenure on 23 June 2024.
An alumnus of the Bangladesh Military Academy, General Waker was commissioned in the Corps of Infantry on 20 December 1985.
With a distinguished career spanning more than three and a half decades, he brings extensive experience from holding key command, staff, and instructional positions.
He has served as the Military Secretary at Army Headquarters and, before his appointment as Chief of General Staff (CGS) of the Bangladesh Army, he was the Principal Staff Officer of the Prime Minister at the Armed Forces Division under the Prime Ministers Office.
General Waker is also an alumnus of the Defence Services Command and Staff College in Mirpur and the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the UK.
He holds a Masters degree in Defence Studies from the National University of Bangladesh and a Master of Arts in Defence Studies from Kings College, University of London.
