Eight commit suicide in 7 districts

Eight people including seven females allegedly committed suicide in separate incidents in seven districts - Tangail, Chattogram, Bhola, Barishal, Bogura, Bagerhat and Faridpur, in three days.  
KALIHATI, TANGAIL: A young woman reportedly committed suicide after staging a four-day sit-in demanding marriage at her lovers house in Kalihati Upazila of the district on Saturday evening.
Deceased Shanta Akter, 23, mother of a child, was a resident of Aluya Village under Brahmanpara Upazila in Cumilla.
She was found hanging in the house of her lover, Sohag, 24, at around 7:30 pm on Saturday.
The incident has caused widespread speculation and mystery in the area.
Following the incident, police have detained the lovers parents Sobura Begum and Nurul Islam for questioning as Sohag has gone into hiding.
It was known that Shanta and Sohag involved in a relationship about a year back when they met over mobile phone. Subsequently, their relationship developed into a romantic affair and they frequently travelled together, presenting themselves as a married couple.
During this time, Sohag promised Shanta to marry her and engaged in physical relations with her multiple times. He also used to take cash and gold jewellery from her. When Shanta started pressuring him to fulfil his promise of marriage, Sohag started avoiding her.
Despite informing local leaders about her plight, Shanta got no support, which led to her emotional distress.
On Saturday evening, overwhelmed with sorrow and frustration, Shanta entered Sohags house and hanged herself from the ceiling fan of a room there.
However, some sources alleged that a powerful local group, in exchange for a large sum of money from Sohags family, might have orchestrated Shantas murder and staged it as a suicide which has led to a significant local intrigue and suspicion.
Sub-Inspector (SI) of Kalihati Police Station (PS) Mintu Chandra Ghosh confirmed the matter on Sunday morning, adding that that the body was recovered from the scene and sent to Tangail General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Legal actions will be taken upon the autopsy reports, the SI added.
HATHAZARI, CHATTOGRAM: A schoolgirl reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of a room in Hathazari Upazila of the district on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Ema Akter, 16, daughter of Didarul Alam and a resident of Alamkum area under Ward No. 3 of Chipatali Union in the upazila. Ema was a ninth grader of Hathazari Girls High School and College and resided in Fatik Kamalpara area in Hathazari Municipality.

According to the deceaseds family members, Ema hanged herself from the ceiling fan of her room in the house in the afternoon when her parents were busy at work. Seeing her hanging, the family members rescued the girl and took to Hathazari Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physician declared her dead.

However, the family members of the deceased would not be able to say the actual reason behind the incident.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hathazari Model PS Md Moniruzzaman said on information, a team of police led by SI Md Imran Hossain recovered the body and sent it to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
However, legal actions will be taken upon investigation, the OC added.

LALMOHAN, BHOLA: A teenage girl reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself in Lalmohan Upazila of the district on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Mst Tanjila Begum, 18, daughter of Md Tachhir Ahmed, a resident of Ward No. 5 under Dhaligouranagar Union in the upazila.

Quoting locals, Lalmohan PS OC (Investigation) Md Enayet Hossain said Tanjila had a love affair with a married man of the area. As her parents scolded her after knowing the matter, Tanjila hanged herself with a scarf from the ceiling fan of her room in the house in the morning out of huff with her parents.

Being informed, police recovered the body in the afternoon and sent it to Bhola Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

However, an unnatural death case was filed with Lalmohan PS in this regard, the OC added.

BARISHAL: Two people including a schoolgirl allegedly committed suicide in separate incidents in Muladi and Sadar upazilas of the district recently.

A schoolgirl reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself in Muladi Upazila on Friday night out of huff with her mother.

The incident took place in Dikrirchar Village under Kazirchar Union of the upazila at around 11 pm.

The deceased was identified as Sumaiya, 13, daughter of Moniruzzaman Tia Bepari, a resident of Dikrirchar Village. She was a seventh grader of Dakshin Kazirchar High School in the upazila.

Local and the deceaseds family sources said Sumaiya went to marriage event at the neighbouring Altaf Fakirs house at around 9 pm, and participated in a dance there.

After returning home, Sumaiyas mother scolded her due to this.

Following this, she hanged herself with a scarf from the ceiling of her room in the house at around 11 pm out of huff with her mother.

Sensing the matter, the family members rescued her and rushed to Muladi Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the girl dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) morgue for an autopsy.

Muladi PS OC Md Jakaria confirmed the incident, adding that an unnatural death case was filed in this regard.
Meanwhile, a teenage boy, who stabbed himself following an altercation with his brother in the city, died at the SBMCH recently.  

The incident took place in BM School road area of the city.

Deceased Md Rafi, 16, was the son of late Md Motaleb of BM School road area. He passed the SSC examinations this year.

Quoting locals and the deceaseds family members, Kotwali Model PS Inspector (Investigation) Amanullah Bari said Rafi was a drug addict. Following his drug consumption, he had an altercation with his brother Redwan recently. At one stage of the altercation, he stabbed himself with a knife, which left him critically injured.

He was then rescued and taken to the SBMCH, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to the SBMCH morgue for an autopsy.

However, an unnatural death case was filed with Kotwali Model PS in this regard, the police official added.
RAMPAL, BAGERHAT: A schoolgirl reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself in Rampal Upazila of the district on Friday.

The incident took place in Kumlai Madhyapara area of the upazila at around 11 am.

Deceased Fatema Khatun, 9, was the daughter of Hasib Sheikh of Kismat Kumlai area under Baintala Union. She was a fourth grader at Kismat Kumlai Alhaj Tafsir Uddin Government Primary School.

Local sources said Fatema along with her mother and younger sister came to visit her maternal grandparents house in Kumlai Madhyapara area recently. On Friday, when her grandmother was set to go to a relatives house, Fatema also wanted to go there. As the grandmother did not agree to bring Fatema with her and went alone there, Fatema hanged herself with a scarf from the ceiling of a room in the house.

Sensing the matter, the family members rescued her and rushed to Rampal Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the girl dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceaseds family members without an autopsy as no complaint was lodged from them.

Rampal PS OC Somen Das confirmed the incident, adding that an unnatural death case was filed in this regard.
 
BOGURA: A woman reportedly committed suicide by consuming sleeping pills in the district.

The deceased was identified as Dr Romana Sharmin Rumma, 35, wife of Sajedul Islam and daughter of late Abdul Kaium of Brindabanpara area. She served as an assistant professor at TMMSS Medical College Hospital and an assistant registrar of the surgery department of Bogura Government Mohammad Ali Hospital.

According to police sources, Dr Rumma attempted to commit suicide by consuming sleeping pills June 19 last.

Initially being treated at TMMSS Medical College Hospital, she was transferred to Dhaka Evercare Hospital by an air ambulance. Later on, she died on Thursday evening while undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Dr Shafiq Amin Kajal, residential medical officer of Government Mohammad Ali Hospital, described Dr Rumma as a dedicated professional with no apparent personal issues that could have hinted at such a tragic outcome.

Bogura Sadar PS OC Saihan Oliullah confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken based on the familys complaint regarding the incident.

FARIDPUR: A woman reportedly committed suicide in Boalmari Upazila of the district on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Selina Khatun, 22, wife of Sohel Chowdhury, 27, hailed from Muduria Village under Dumuria Upazila in Khulna District. She along with her husband lived in a rented house owned by one Harun Talukder in Arajee Shibananda Village under Satoir Union of the upazila.

Police and local sources said the couple used to work in the Dobra Jute Mill together.  On Thursday morning, the couple had been locked into an altercation with each other over family issues. Following this, Selina hanged herself from the ceiling of her room in the rented house at noon out of huff with her husband.
 
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Faridpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Boalmari PS SI Masudur Rahman confirmed the incident, adding that an unnatural death case was filed in this regard.
