A Dhaka court on Monday issued an injunction on former National Board of Revenue (NBR) member Matiur Rahman, his first wife, and his son leaving the country as they allegedly accumulated huge wealth.
Matiurs first wife is Laila Kaniz Lucky, upazila parishad chairman of Narsingdis Raipura, and his son is Ahmed Taufiqur Rahman Arnob.
In recent time , Matiur Rahmans name was widely discussed across the country and Matiurs sons bid to buy a goat at a price of Tk 15 lakh, on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha went on viral in social media.
The incident drew widespread attention, causing curiosity and controversy.
Matiur disowned his son.
Judge Mohammad As-Shams Jaglul Hossain of Metropolitan Senior Special Court passed the order following a prayer submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Inquiry team chief Md Anwar Hossain, also Deputy Director of ACC mentioned in his petition that National Board of Revenue member Matiur Rahman acquired huge property in the country as well as outside of the country and laundered huge money through Hundi and under invoicing.
ACC was apprised through a reliable source that Matiur and his family members are trying to leave the country.
For the sake of inquiry an order should be passed to ban on travel of Matiur and family members. Earlier, the anti-graft body conducted inquiries four times in the same allegations against him.
Matiur Rahman, the president of the National Board of Revenues Customs, Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal, was removed from his post amid controversy over his wealth.
The government made Matiur Rahman Officer-on Special Duty in the Internal Resources Division with immediate effect.
Besides, he was asked not to attend meetings of Board of Directors of state-owned Sonali Bank PLC as a director.
The allegations came to light after a video of Matiurs son, Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat, who bought a goat at a price of Tk 15 lakh, went viral before Eid-ul-Azha. In this connection, Matiur Rahman told the media that Ifat is not his son.
Matiur claimed he has two children: a daughter and a son. His daughter lives in Canada, while his son graduated from a university in the US. Nizam Uddin Hazari, MP of Feni-2, however, confirmed to the media that his cousin Shammi Akhtar is the second wife of Matiur and Ifat is his son.
Matiur Rahmans sons luxurious lifestyle, including expensive brand watches and cars, properties he owned, including resorts, shooting houses, bungalows and landed properties and his family members became the talk of the country.
Details on the wealth owned by Matiur Rahman and his family have also come to the fore. So far, his two wives, sons, brothers, sisters and other relatives reportedly own land, apartments, resorts and shares in various companies in six districts. Other than this, he also invested in capital markets. details have been found that this controversial government official and his relatives own 2,145 decimals (65 bighas) of land, eight apartments, two resorts, a picnic spot and two factories with his first wife Laila Kaniz owning the maximum share.
A college teacher, Laila Kaniz is currently the chairman of Raipur upazila in Narsingdi and relief and social welfare affairs secretary of Awami Leagues Narsingdi district unit. She owns 28 bighas of land and five apartments including four apartments in a building in Mirpur, Dhaka.
