Bangladesh and Maldives have agreed to work together in climate diplomacy for common benefits.
"We discussed the proposed joint eco-tourism programmes combining Bangladeshs beaches and Maldives islands, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury on Wednesday after meeting his Maldives counterpart Thoriq Ibrahim on the sidelines of South Asia Cooperative Environ-ment Programme (SACEP) conference in Thimphu, Bhutan.
Saber requested Ibrahim to increase employment opportunities for Bangladeshi workers in Maldives and ensuring their welfare, according to a press release.
The Maldives Minister sought cooperation of Bangladesh in importing fruit, forest, and medicinal tree saplings and in establishing nurseries, it said.
Thoriq told Saber Chowdhury that the Maldives labour market which remained closed for a long time has been reopened to Bangladeshis recently.
This is expected increase the number of Bangladeshi workers in the Maldives, he said.
The two ministers also discussed using Bangla-deshs geo-satellite to monitor sea level changes.
This collaborative effort between the two countries will play a crucial role in addressing climate change and expanding eco-tourism, the release said.
