RAJSHAHI: A local leader of Awami League (AL), who was injured during a factional clash in Bagha Upazila of the district, died at a hospital in the city on Wednesday afternoon.

Deceased Ashraful Islam Bablu was the general secretary of Bagha Upazila Unit of the AL.

Mustafa Kamal, in-charge of Intensive Care Unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), said Ashraful died at around 5 pm on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Earlier, in the morning of June 22 last, at least 20 people were injured in a clash between two factions of the AL in Bagha Upazila.

The injured were rescued and admitted to Bagha Upazila Health Complex first.

Among the injured, Ashraful Islam Bablu and another individual were, later, shifted to the RMCH for better treatment.

According to the locals, local AL leaders and the supporters of local lawmaker Shahriar Alam formed a human chain protesting alleged irregularities and nepotism involving Bagha Municipality Mayor Akkas Ali, who is also a member of the district AL committee.

The defeated Upazila Parishad Chairman Rokonuzzaman Rintu and Bagha ALs General Secretary Ashraful Islam Bablu led the protest programme.

Another group of local AL called a protest procession and rally protesting the extra money collected in the name of Dalik Lekhak Samity of Bagha Sub-Register Office.

The two sides clashed when the procession crossed the human chain of another group. Several crude bombs were exploded during the clash. Police fired 50 rounds of tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

NARAYANGANJ: A young man was hacked to death by miscreants in the city on Tuesday night.

The incident took place in front of Ma Hotel in Mandalpara area of the city at around 8 pm.

The deceased was identified as Nasir Sheikh, 25, son of Babul Sheikh. He lived in a rented house owned by one Al Amin Mia in Farazikanda area.

According to local sources, a group of miscreants attacked on Nasir in front of Ma Hotel in Mandalpara area of the city at around 8 pm, and hacked him indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured.

Later on, he was rescued by locals and taken to Narayanganj General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

BAGERHAT: A man was killed by his nephew in Sadar Upazila of the district on Monday.

The incident took place in Jatrapur Chapatala area under the upazila in the evening.

The deceased was identified as Azahar Ali Sheikh, a resident of the area.

It was known that Azahar had an altercation with his nephew Humayun Sheikh over releasing fish fries in a pond in the area in the evening. At one stage of the altercation, Humayun hit his uncle on the head with a bamboo stick, which left Azahar critically injured.
