A Dhaka court on Thursday placed two arrested -- Faisal Ali Sahaji alias Shaji and Mustafizur Rahman Fakir - on a six-day remand each in a case filed over abduction of Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar for murder.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ataullah passed the order after Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Assistant Commissioner of Detective Branch of Police, also investigation officer of the case, produced the duo with a 10-day remand prayer each for questioning.

The IO said in his prayer that Faisal used chloroform to make Anar lose consciousness and Mustafizur later stripped him and tied him to a chair.

Moreover, Amanullah alias Shimul gave a confessional statement before a magistrate where he implicated the two with the murder, and so they need to be remanded to identify the whereabouts of others responsible for committing such an offence.

No lawyers stood on behalf of the accused.

After hearing both the sides, the court sent them to police custody for interrogation.

Faisal and Mustafiz were arrested in Khagrachhari where they had been masquerading as devotees at a remote Kali Temple for 23 days.

They introduced themselves in Khagrachhari as Palash Roy and Shimul Roy. They were among the seven people present in the Kolkata flat where Anar was killed in May. On May 19, they came back to Bangladesh from Kolkata after the murder and contacted Aktaruzzaman, who planned the murder.

Slain lawmaker Anar went to Kolkata on May 12, and on May 22, India and Bangladesh police said he was murdered.

Earlier on Wednesday, a separate operation led by the DB chief recovered three phones used by another accused, Kazi Kamal, in Jhenaidah. This operation involved collaboration with local Jhenaidah authorities. A total of nine people have been arrested in Bangladesh, India and Nepal in connection with the killing, he said.

Aktaruzzaman is currently in the US, and the authorities are trying to get him extradited.
