Two get life term in drugs cases

Separate courts on Thursday sentenced two men to life-term imprisonment in different drugs cases in two districts - Naogaon and Natore.

MANDA, NAOGAON: A court in the district on Thursday sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment in a drugs case in Manda Upazila in 2023.

Senior Judge of District and Sessions Judge Court Abu Shamim Azad delivered the verdict in the afternoon.

The court also fined the convict Tk 10,000, and in default, he has to suffer one more year in jail.

The convicted man is Alauddin alias Ala, son of late Abdas Uddin Mandal, a resident of Mahanagar (Madhyapara) area under Manda Upazila in the district.

According to the prosecution, on September 20, 2023, acting on a tip-off, a team of Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) in the district conducted a drive in the house of Alauddin alias Ala and recovered 60 grams of heroin after searching his body, and arrested him.

The DNC then filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act against the accused with Manda Police Station (PS).
Later on, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court against him.

After examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses, the court found him guilty and handed down the punishment on Thursday.

Public Prosecutor (PP) of the court Advocate Abdul Khalek confirmed the matter.

NATORE: A court in the district on Thursday sentenced a microbus driver to life-term imprisonment for possessing heroin in Baraigram Upazila in 2021.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Moinuddin handed down the verdict in presence of the convict.

The condemned convict is Jewel Ali, 37, son of Ramjan Ali, a resident of Shahibag area of Sadar Upazila in Chapainawabganj District.

The court also fined him Tk 5,000.

According to the prosecution, on information, a team of police halted a microbus on the Bonpara-Hatikumrul highway near Royna Petrol Pump in Baraigram Upazila of the district on June 19, 2021.

After checking, police recovered 400 grams heroin from the microbus and arrested its driver Jewel.

Later on, a case under the Narcotics Control Act was filed with Baraigram PS against him.
Police then submitted the charge-sheet to the court.

Following this, the court pronounced the verdict on Thursday after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.
