Police arrested a man for his alleged involvement in killing his four-month pregnant wife in Ghatail Upazila of Tangail district.
The woman was Jemi Akter, 22, daughter of Jamal Hossain from Manaji village. Her father is an expatriate.
Police arrested her husband Monir, 25, a labourer by profession, on Sunday.
Quoting family members, Mohammad Abu Salam Mia, chief of Ghatail Police Station said the couple locked into altercation over family issue in Shondhanpur village on Saturday evening. At one stage, Monir beat up his wife indiscriminately.
Seriously injured Jemi was taken to the Ghatail Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Tangail Medical College Hospital.
As her condition deteriorated Jemi was taken to a private hospital in Dhaka where she died at 2:30am on Sunday. The couple have a two-year-old son and Jemi was four months pregnant, said sister of the victim Nasima.
She demanded exemplary punishment for my sister’s killers.
Officer-in-charge of Tangail Police Station Abu Salam said locals detained Monir at his house following the incident. He was later handed over to the police. Legal action is being taken over the incident, he said.
