The government has taken a decision to establish a separate company will be established to manage the Padma Multipurpose Bridge.
A cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, approved this decision on Monday.
Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain briefed the newsmen after the meeting
He said the company will be named ‘Padma Bridge Operations and Maintenance Company PLC’. It will be a 100 per cent government owned company and it would have Tk 1,000 crore in authorised capital.
The company would have a 14-member board of directors and would operate under the Company Act. Board members would include representatives from the Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Finance, Bridges Division and Bangladesh Bridge Authority, the secretary said.
It will be responsible for maintenance, toll collection, and other operations.
Currently, Korea Expressway and China's Major Bridge Engineering
Company (MBEC) are carrying out the toll collection and maintenance of
the bridge. The foreign companies were appointed for five years.
Replying
to a question, Mahbub Hossain said the proposed company will take over
the responsibility after the expiry of agreement signed with the two
foreign companies.
