Five people murdered in five districts

Five people including a pregnant woman and a teenage girl have been murdered in separate incidents in five districts - Tangail, Gaibandha, Sherpur, Faridpur and Narayanganj, in three days.

GHATAIL, TANGAIL: Police arrested a man for killing his four-month pregnant wife in Ghatail Upazila of the district on Sunday.

The deceased woman was identified as Jemi Akter, 22, daughter of expatriate Jamal Hossain of Manaji village.

Police, however, arrested the deceaseds husband Monir, 25, a day-labourer by profession.

Quoting the deceaseds family members, Ghatail PS OC Mohammad Abu Salam Mia said the couple locked into an altercation over family issue in Shondhanpur Village on Saturday evening.

At one stage of the altercation, Monir beat up his wife indiscriminately, leaving her seriously injured.

Critically injured Jemi Akter was then rescued by the local people and taken to the Ghatail Upazila Health Complex first, where the on-duty doctor shifted her to Tangail Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

As her condition deteriorated further, Jemi was then admitted to a private hospital in Dhaka, where she succumbed to her injuries at around 2:30 am on Sunday. She had a two-year-old son and was four-month pregnant, said sister of the deceased Nasima.

The deceaseds sister Nasima demanded exemplary punishment for her sisters killer.

However, local people caught Monir from his house in the area on Sunday following the incident. Later on, they handed over him to the police.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tangail Sadar Police Station (PS) Abu Salam confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

GAIBANDHA: A man was allegedly beaten to death by his rivals over a land dispute in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday night.

The deceased was identified as Bodiuzzaman Zamal, 50, a resident of Hashem Bazar Purbo Para area under Kholahati Union in the upazila.

Local and the deceaseds family sources said Bodiuzzaman had a longstanding dispute with his neighbour Ilfat Ali over a land.

Following this, the rivals of Bodiuzzaman beat him while he was alone in Sarrasta area adjacent to Molla Auto Furniture on Saturday evening, leaving him critically injured.

Knowing the matter, the family members then rescued him and immediately took him to the Gaibandha Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Bodiuzzaman Zamal dead.

Being informed, police have recovered the body and sent it to the Gaibandha Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Gaibandha Sadar PS OC Masud Rana confirmed the incident, adding that efforts are ongoing to arrest those involved in the killing and legal action would be taken in this regard.

SHERPUR: A farmer was killed and three others were injured in an attack carried out by their rivals over a land dispute in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as Samidul Haque Kena, 65, a resident of Joginimura Namapara Village.
It was known that Samidul had a dispute with his neighbours Harun and Siddiq Khalifa over the ownership of a piece of land for a long time.

On Saturday morning, the rivals attacked on Samidul while he was trying to plant banana trees on the disputed land, and beat him indiscriminately leaving him critically injured. Three others persons including Parvez Mia, son of Samidul, were also injured in the attack.

The injured were then rescued and taken to Sherpur Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Samidul dead. Being informed, police have recovered the body.

Inspector (Investigation) of Sherpur Sadar PS Md Shafiqul Islam confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

BHANGA, FARIDPUR: A teenage girl was allegedly strangled to death by miscreants after rape in Bhanga Upazila of the district on Friday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Rekha Aktar, 15, daughter of Abdul Hai Matubbar, a resident of Hogladangi Sadardi Village in the upazila.

It was known that a group of miscreants took Rekha to a jute field and violated her there forcefully while she was going to a pond for taking bath near her house. The miscreants then strangled the girl with her scarf.

Later on, Rekhas uncle Tuku Matobbar spotted her body beside the jute field at around 5 pm and informed police. On information, police recovered the body.

Sub-Inspector of Bhanga PS Khalid Hossain confirmed the incident, adding that efforts are ongoing to find out the culprits and a case was filed in this regard.

NARAYANGANJ: A local leader of Awami League (AL) was hacked to death by his rivals in Sadar Upazila of the district on Thursday noon.

Four others were also injured in the incident that took place in Uttar Kashipur Alipara area of Fatulla at around 1:30 pm.

Deceased Suruj Mia alias Suruj Member, 70, was a resident of the area and finance secretary of Kashipur Union Unit of AL. He was also the president of Alipara Jame Mosque Committee.

The injured persons are: Suruj Mias two sons Md Jonny Ahmed, 35, and Raju Ahmed, 40; and Md Russell, 32, and Shakil, 30.

The deceaseds family sources said Suruj Mia had a previous enmity with Salauddin Salu and Hira of the area over the brick, sand and auto-rickshaw garage business.
 
Following this, a group of 20 to 25 people led by Salu and Hira attacked on Suruj Mia while he was returning home after performing Johr prayers at Alipara Jame Mosque, and hacked him with sharp weapons, leaving the AL leader critically injured.

Four other persons including Suruj Mias two sons were also injured as they came forward to save him.
Later on, the five injured were rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the on-duty doctor declared Suruj Mia dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to the DMCH morgue for an autopsy.

However, the law enforcers have, so far, detained nine people in connection with the murder.

The arrested are: Habib, 20, Md Sohel, 30, Mohammad Anwar Hossain Anar, 24, Mohammad Foisal Molla, 32, Wasel Hossain Nahid, 27, Masud, 52, Bappi, 23, Jamal, 48, and Kaiyum, 22.
 
Fatulla Model PS OC Nure Azam confirmed the incident.
