Two to die, 7 get life term in separate cases

Different courts on Sunday sentenced two people to death and seven others to life-term imprisonment in separate cases in five districts - Narayanganj, Jashore, Tangail, Chapainawabganj and Panchagarh.

NARAYANGANJ: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife over dowry in Rupganj Upazila in 2017.

District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Nazmul Haque Shyamol handed down the verdict in the afternoon in presence of the convict.

The condemned convict is Md Juwel Mia, 28, son of Md Marfat Ali, a resident of Ichhakhali Village under Rupganj Upazila.  

The court also fined him Tk 50,000.

Public Prosecutor (PP) of the court Rakib Uddin Ahmed confirmed the matter.

According to the prosecution, Juwel Mia got married with Sumi Akhter, daughter of Md Siraj Bhuiyan of Nagarpara area in Rupganj Upazila. He used to torture Sumi for dowry since the marriage.

At one stage, Sumis father gave Tk 90,000 to Juwel. But he demanded a motorcycle worth Tk 2.9 lakh. As Sumi protested this, Juwel strangulated her to death in the evening of June 17, 2017.
 
The deceaseds father Md Siraj Bhuiyan lodged a murder case with Rupganj Police Station (PS) in this regard.

After investigation, police then submitted the chare-sheet to the court accusing Juwel Mia.

Following this, the tribunal judge pronounced the verdict on Sunday afternoon after examining the case records and taking depositions of seven witnesses.

JASHORE: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced a man to death for killing his sister-in-law in Bagharpara Upazila in 2019.

Suraiya Begum, judge of Jashore 4th Additional District and Sessions Court, handed down the verdict.

The condemned convict is Mohammad Shahabuddin, a resident of Pantapara Village in the upazila.
The court also fined the convict Tk 1 lakh.

According to the prosecution, Mohammad Shahabuddin stabbed his sister-in-law Zinia Yasmin Tuli to death at their house over a family feud on April 13 in 2019.

Later on, the deceaseds father filed a murder case with the PS concerned.

After finishing the investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court accusing the deceaseds brother-in-law Shahabuddin, mother-in-law Farida Begum and her husband Zulfikar Ali.

Following this, the tribunal judge pronounced the verdict on Sunday after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.

However, the other accused Farida Begum and Zulfikar Ali were acquitted by the court order as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.

Expressing dissatisfaction, the plaintiff said, "Zulfikar Ali and his mother were directly involved in the murder and the charge-sheet which was pressed by the investigating officer of the case also clarified the matter, but the court acquitted them. We will appeal in a higher court in this regard."

DHANBARI, TANGAIL: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced four people to life-term imprisonment for killing a man in Dhanbari Upazila in 2018.

Mahmudul Hasan, judge of Rangail Additional District and Sessions court, handed down the verdict in the afternoon.

The condemned convicts are: Samsu, 53, Lutfur Rahman, 41, Naresh Robi Das, 39, and Nazrul, 32. All of them were residents of Narilla Village in the upazila.

The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each, and in default of the payment, they will have to suffer six more months in the jail.

According to the prosecution, on May 17 in 2018, the convicts killed Ismail Hossain in Norilla area over a previous enmity and left his body in a ditch beside Narilla College. Locals spotted the body two days after the kiling and informed the matter to police.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene on May 19 in 2018.

On May 20 in 2018, the deceaseds brother filed a murder case with Dhanbari PS in this regard.

After investigation, police submitted the charge-sheet to the court accusing the four.

Following this, the court found them guilty and handed down the punishment in presence of all the convicts after examining the case records and taking depositions of the witnesses.

Additional PP of the court Monirul Islam Khan confirmed the matter.

CHAPAINAWABGANJ: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced two persons to life-term imprisonment in two separate cases.

Senior District and Sessions Judge Md Adeeb Ali, also the judge of the Special Tribunal-1, handed down the verdicts in the afternoon in absence of both the convicts.

The convicts are: Nasim Ali, 26, son of Sesarul Ali, a resident of Tartipur Village under Shibganj Upazila; and Jahirul Islam, 37, son of Sadequl Islam, a resident of Chowdala Nandalalpur Village under Gomastapur Upazila in the district.

According to the prosecution, Ziaur Rahman, son of Monirul Islam of Tartipur Village in Shibganj Upazila, went out of the house at the night of September 8, 2017, but did not return. Later on, his body was found in Tartipur Swashanghat area of Shibganj Upazila the next day.

The deceaseds father Monirul Islam then filed a murder case with Shibganj PS in this regard on the same day.

Following this, police arrested accused Nasim Ali on September 14, 2017.

Investigating officer of the case Sub-Inspector (SI) Abu Abdullah Jahid of Detective Branch of Police submitted the charge-sheet to the court on October 31, 2017.

After examining the case records and hearing the witnesses, the court sentenced Nasim Ali to life-term imprisonment.

The court also fined the convict of Tk 50,000, and in default, he has to suffer two more years in jail.

On the other hand, members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), in a drive at Saragram under Boalia Union of Gomastapur Upazila in the district on May 31, 2022, arrested Jahirul Islam along with two pistols, two magazines and six bullets.

SI of RAB-5 Akramul Hoque then filed a case under the Arms Act against him with Gomastapur PS.
Dilip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Gomastapur PS and investigating officer of the case, submitted the charge-sheet to the court on June 30, 2022.

After hearing the witnesses and examining the case records, the court pronounced the verdict on Sunday.

PANCHAGARH: A court in the district on Sunday sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment for violating his 16-year-old daughter in Sadar Upazila in 2023.

BM Tariqul Kabir, judge of Panchagarh District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, pronounced the verdict in presence of the convict.

The convict is Saiful Islam 49, a resident of Kamata Kajaldighi Union of Panchagarh Sadar upazila.
The court also fined him Tk 50,000, and in default, he has to suffer one more year of rigorous imprisonment.

According to the case statement, Saiful got married with the victims mother with whom he has five children and two daughters, and got separated on August in 2023 due to Saifuls failure to provide expenses for the children. Eventually, the victims mother moved back to her parents home along with two sons and two daughters.

On September 24 of that year, the victim went to her fathers house to attend in a cousins wedding when Saiful violated the teenager.

The victims mother filed a rape case with Panchagarh Sadar PS on November 18, 2023.

Later on, the investigation officer of the case SI Shamsujjoha Sarkar submitted the charge-sheet to the court on March 28 after finishing the investigation.

Within seven months of the case being filed, the court completed the trial and handed down the verdict after hearing eight witnesses.

Special PP of the court Advocate Azizur Rahman Azu confirmed the matter.
