Chattogram judicial magistrate court on Monday granted a two-day
remand for each of the four accused in connection with the
rape of a young woman on the moving Udayan Express train on June 26.
Judicial Magistrate Nurul Harun passed the order on Monday afternoon after a hearing.
The four arrested individuals are Mohammad Jamal, 27, Mohammad Sharif, 28, Mohammad Abdur Rob, 28, and Mohammad Rashed, 27. All of them were employees of the catering service company of the train.
Chattogram Railway Police Station officer-in-charge SM Shahidul Islam said that a five-day remand for questioning the four suspects was requested in the court, but the court granted a two-day remand for each after the hearing.
The incident occurred on the early morning of June 26 on the Udayan Express train which was heading towards Chattogram from Sylhet. The 19-year-old victim reported being raped in the train's food carriage while the train was passing through the Laksam area.
Despite the incident happening in the early hours, it came to light later in the evening.
Following the complaint, railway police arrested Jamal, Sharif, and Rashed from the train on the same day and Abdur Rob was arrested the following day in Noakhali.
The train's director (guard), Abdur Rahim, has been temporarily suspended by the railway authorities in connection with the incident.
Following the incident, the Eastern Regional Commercial Manager's Office of the Railway issued an order suspending the catering services provided by SA Corporation on the Udayan and Paharika Express trains on the Chattogram-Sylhet route.
