RANGAMATI, July 2: The electricity production in the Karnaphuli Hydropower Plant in the district has increased, with rising water level in the Kaptai Lake.

The rain in the last several days and the upstream hilly tide swelled the lake water. With this, the power production has started to increase.

On Tuesday at 9am, four units of total five ones of the plant produced 164 mega watt (MW) of electricity.

This information was confirmed by manager of the plant ATM Absujjaher.

Unit 1 and Unit 2 each produced 42mw electricity totalling 82mw while Unit 4 and Unit 5 each produced 40mw totalling 80mw.

This is the highest electricity production by the hydropower plant in the current year.

The lake water is likely to swell further, increasing the present electricity production, he added.

The Unit 3 is still remaining suspended.

On-duty engineers of the control room of the plant said, according to the roll-curve, this time of the year it is supposed to remain 84.16 feet MSL (means sea level) in the lake; and on Tuesday the water in the lake was recorded at 83.69 MSL.
The water capacity of the lake is 109MSL.

It is possible to produce 230mw to 240mw electricity in the Karnaphuli Hydropwer Plant if it is fully activated and managed.
Locals demanded of the government for keeping up the power production in the plant.

The lake has accumulated sediment in the absence of dredging. So it is urgent to dredge the lake, they added.
