Hundreds of students of Dhaka University (DU) and seven affiliated colleges on Wednesday blocked Shahbagh Intersection in the capital for the second consecutive day, demanding abolition of quotas in government jobs.

Under the banner of Anti-discriminatory Student Movement, the protesters also demanded formation of a commission to remove irrational and discriminatory quotas in all grades of government jobs, but for the backward communities and only for once, if there is no candidate from backwards communities the vacancies should be filled up on the basis of merit by taking effective steps to ensure a corruption-free, fair and merit-based recruitment.

Students and job aspirants gathered in front of the DU Central Library at noon and held sit-in demonstration against the quota system. Later, in a procession they paraded several roads on the DU campus.

At around 3:40pm  students blocked the Shahbagh Intersection, chanting slogans against  quotas until 5:10pm.

They described quota reservation in government jobs as illogical and discriminatory.

Protesters said the spirit of the Liberation War  is opposed to discrimination in the society  as  Freedom Fighters sacrificed lives to remove  discriminations done by the rulers of the then West Pakistan.

DU student Sarjis Islam said, "Our Freedom Fighters did not sacrifice their lives for creating extra advantages for their children and grand children. They stood for equality in the country. They fearlessly fought to end injustice and discrimination in all forms."

Anti-discriminatory Student Movement coordinator Nahid Islam announced that a sit-in demonstration will be in front of the DU Central Library at 11:00am today.

Nahid requested students from all the universities in the country to hold  demonstrations on their respective campuses at the same time under the same banner.
