Research and development (R&D) should get more priority in our public and private universities to create skilled graduates to meet demand of the local job market as well as global market. We must focus on how to mitigate skill gap.

Academics and industry owners made the observation at a round table titled "Strengthening Collaboration between the Private Sector and Academia: The Way Forward" organized by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Saturday.

DCCI President Ashraf Ahmed said on this occasion that every year around 2 million graduates are coming into the job market but we are failing to provide them job.

According to BIDS, unemployment among graduates in the country is quite big at 60 percent. World Bank survey reveals 46 percent of employers struggle to find job seekers with necessary skills, while 69 percent report shortages of skilled manpower for technical and managerial roles.

Due to lack of skills a big part of the local job market is being occupied by foreign nationals while our manpower is not also getting highly paying jobs abroad. Participants at the round table emphasized that industry- academia need to work together to develop both soft and hard skills.

Besides, shared efforts by private and public sector must increase in research and development work on contemporary issues which can enrich and create new learning on macroeconomic matters and technical jobs.

Vice Chancellor of ULAB, Professor Imran Rahman said around 40 percent of youth graduates are still unemployed. He said in our country university students through internship actually learn a little. He suggested for apprenticeship for better learning in theoretical background.

He said many of our subjects or curricula studied in universities do not have much demand even in the global market. He therefore urged popularizing ICT and science based education to compete with rapidly moving world. Moreover, private funding in the university R&D or students project should get tax benefit, he recommended.

BUET professor Dr. Muhammad Anisuzzaman Talukder, said there should have been a strong funding trust between the industry and academia sector. He said that in Bangladesh, our university curriculum some few good things can be included.

Dr. AKM Waresul Karim, Professor, North South University, Brigadier General Mohammad Saadat Hossain, Dean, Bangladesh University of Professionals, Col. Khondoker Zahirul alam, Director, international affairs, BUP, Dr. Mohammad Zahedul Alam, Professor, BUP, Md. Chowdhury, Professor, AIUB among others took part in the discussion.
