At least five people died and 15 others were injured after being electrocuted during Ratha Yatra in Bogura town on Sunday afternoon.
Four of the deceased were identified as Alok, Atashi, Naresh, and Ranjita. The identity of the other person is not yet known.
According to locals, the Ratha Yatra started from Seujgari Iskon temple at 5pm. When it reached near Seujgari Amtala intersection, the dome of the Ratha came into contact with a high-voltage electric wire on the road and caught fire around 5:15pm.
Sudip Chakrabarty, superintendent of police in Bogura, has acknowledged the matter.
Officer-in-charge of Bogura Sadar Police Station Md Shaihan Waliullah said five people died after being electrocuted on the spot. The injured were taken to the Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
The detailed identities of the victims could not be known immediately, he added.
The Rath Yatra, one of the major religious festivals of Hindu communities, is celebrated across the country on Sunday.
