Two Union Parishad (UP) chairmen were shot to death in separate incidents in two districts - Munshiganj and Khulna, on Saturday and Sunday.
MUNSHIGANJ: A UP chairman was reportedly shot to death by his relatives in Tongibari Upazila of the district on Sunday noon following a dispute over school managing committee election.
Deceased HM Suman Haldar, 45, son of Piar Hossain Halder, was the chairman of Panchgaon UP.
According to locals, Suman had an altercation with his uncle and cousins Nur Mohammad, Nur Ahmed Bhola, Deku Nur and Kawser centring the Panchgaon Al Haz Wahed Ali Dewan High School Managing Committee election at around 1:30 pm. At one stage, one of them shot Suman.
Locals then rescued Suman and took to Tongibari Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
However, the law enforcers have arrested Nur Mohammad, son of late Mukbul Halder, and his sons Seku Nur and Kawser in connection with the incident.
It was known that all of them are the followers of former UP chairman and school managing committee president Md Milenur Rahman Milon.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tongibari Police Station (PS) Mollah Shoyeb Ali confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.
KHULNA: A UP chairman was shot to death by miscreants in Dumuria Upazila of the district on Saturday night while returning home after attending an Awami League (AL) meeting.
Deceased Sheikh Rabiul Islam, 37, was the chairman of Sharafpur UP and a member of Dumuria Upazila AL. He stayed in Nirala residential area in Khulna City along with his family members.
Police and local sources said Rabiul went to Dumuria on Saturday afternoon to join a meeting of AL. Miscreants attacked him in Gutudia area at around 10 pm while he was returning home in Khulna City riding on a motorcycle, and shot him.
Critically injured Rabiul was then rescued and taken to Dumuria Upazila Health Complex first, and then shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Dumuria PS OC Sukanta Saha confirmed the incident, adding that the law enforcers are investigating the matter and trying to detain those involved in the killing.
