Rain pushes vegetable prices up at Amtali

AMTALI, BARGUNA, July 8: Along with all essentials, prices of different vegetables have gone beyond purchasing capacities of general people in Amtali Upazila of the district.

In the last several days, the vegetable supply decreased due to damage to farms by non-stop raining.

This picture of unaffordable price hikes of vegetables was seen in different bazaars in the upazila including Natun Bazar, AK School Bazar and Gazipur Bazar on Wednesday (July 3).  
      
While talking with this correspondent of The Daily Observer, traders said, the non-stop raining for the last several days halted supply of vegetables to bazaars; that is why vegetables are selling at higher prices as these are purchased at higher rates.

Per kilogram (KG) bitter gourd was selling at Tk 110 against Tk 100, two days back. Brinjal was selling at Tk 100 against Tk 80, cucumber at Tk 80 against previous Tk 60, and papaya at Tk 50 against Tk 30-40.

Per piece bottle gourd was selling at Tk 70-100, spiny gourd at Tk 70 per kg, pointed gourd at Tk 60 per kg, and okra at Tk 65 per kg.

At present, green chilli is selling at Tk 300 against Tk 250-270, one day back.

Per haali (four pieces) green banana is selling at Tk 60 while per haali lemon is selling at Tk 20.

Indian onion is selling at Tk 100 per kg while the local one is selling at Tk 110-120 per kg.
 
Farmed hen egg price didn decrease. On Wednesday per dozen (twelve pieces) was selling at Tk 155 while per dozen duck eggs is selling at Tk 220-230.

A consumer Shaon said, "We are in great hardship due to price hikes of essentials including vegetables."

Another Sajib Mia at Talukdar Bazar said, "I do a little job. Most of the salary is spent as house rent, education expense and treatment. I can afford essentials. I find no option how to maintain my family."

A kitchen item trader at AK School Bazar Hanif Mia said, "We did not get supply of vegetables due to two days non-stop raining. After the raining, the vegetable prices can come down."

Amtali Upazila Nirbahi Officer and mobile team magistrate Mohammad Ashraful Alam said, if irregularities are found, stern action will be taken through mobile court.
