Two Dhaka University (DU) students have filed a petition with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging the High Court verdict on quota reinstatement.

Around 11 am on Tuesday, two students of Dhaka University sought permission from the court to submit the application seeking a stay on the effectiveness of the High Court order. Judge Ashfaqul Islam gave the permission.

Later, the application was filed with the concerned branch of the Appellate Division at around 12:30 pm.

Al Saadi Bhuiyan, a student of Dhaka University's anthropology department and also president of Dhaka University Journalist Association, and Ahnaf Sayeed Khan, a student of the Urdu Department, submitted the petition.

Senior lawyer Shah Manzurul Haque was present on behalf of the petitioners. Lawyer M Harunur Rashid Khan was also with him.

On July 4, a six-judge bench led by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan heard the application. The Appellate Division upheld the High Court’s verdict temporarily and instructed the state to file a leave-to-appeal once the full verdict is published, adjourning the case hearing.

On June 5, the High Court declared illegal the circular that cancelled the quotas, including those for freedom fighters, in first and second-class government jobs.

As a result, the 30 per cent quota for freedom fighters in government jobs will remain in place.
