In the third quarter of the fiscal 2023-24 in January-March period, Bangladeshs GDP grew by 6.12 percent as per Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). This figure, released on Tuesday, indicates a significant increase from the 2.30 percent growth in the same quarter of the previous year.
BBSs data reveals that the GDP size at current prices reached Tk13.5 trillion in the third quarter of 2023-24, up from Tk11.4 trillion in the same period of the last fiscal. This growth follows previous quarterly increases of 6.01 percent in Q1 and 3.78 percent in Q2 of 2023-24.
The industrial sector led this expansion with a robust 7.03 percent growth, adding Tk8.63 trillion to the GDP at constant prices during the January-March period.
The report also highlights substantial sectoral growth which includes 5.46 percent increase in agricultural sector compared to 1.04 percent and 4.65 percent in the first and second quarters. The services sector grew by 4.97 percent, improving from 3.73 percent and 3.06 percent in the previous quarters.
These figures contrast sharply with the same period in 2022-23, where agriculture grew by 1.88 percent, industry by 4.98 percent, and services by 1.47 percent.
The updated figures of the BBS report aligns with the International Monetary Funds (IMF) guidelines, noting that initial GDP estimates often require revisions as more data becomes available.
