GAIBANDHA, July 10: As many as 9,500 flood-hit families of four districts have recently got cash assistance of Tk 1.51 crore from United Nations Fund for Population previously  known as United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA).

According to sources at Bangladesh Water Development Board, chars located in the eastern side of the Jamuna River and river basins of western side of the river have been flooded due to incessant rain and hilly water from the upstream of India.

As a result, hundreds of people living in chars and river basins have been marooned and their sorrows know no bound.

To help the flood victims mitigate their sufferings, UNFPA  and its partner organization Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK) stood beside them and distributed hygiene dignity kits (16 kinds) to 7,500 flood-affected families of Gaibandha, Kurigram, Sirajganj and Jamalpur districts of the country.

In addition, Tk 67.50 lakh as transport allowance had also been given to the beneficiaries. Each of them received Tk 900 as allowance.

Apart from it, the cash of Tk 83.85 lakh was also transferred to 1,950 flood-hit families through their bKash accounts without any hassle, so that the beneficiaries could utilise the money for purchasing essentials, medicines and the purpose of temporary shed building on the safer places for living during the emergency,  she also said.

Beside this, the organization also distributed cash money of Tk 2.15 lakh to 50 transgender people to help them purchase dignity kits during the flood. Each of them received Tk 4,300, sources said.

Kits and cash distribution activities for the flood victims of the districts were done successfully in partnership with GUK, said Joya Proshad, an official of the organization.
