Road mishaps claim 20 lives in 12 districts

A total of 20 people including five minor children and two women have been killed and at least 12 others injured in separate road accidents in 12 districts - Patuakhali, Narayanganj, Gaibandha, Moulvibazar, Kishoreganj, Dinajpur, Naogaon, Laxmipur, Habiganj, Munshiganj, Rajbari and Barishal, in recent times. 

BAUPHAL, PATUAKHALI: An elderly man was killed in a collision between two auto-rickshaws in Bauphal Upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.

The accident took place at around 11 am at in front of Bauphal Fire Service Station in the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Selim Sardar, 60, a resident of Daspara Village under the upazila.

Quoting locals, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bauuphal Police Station (PS) Shonit Kumar Gayen said Selim along with his daughter-in-law was heading towards Bauphal to visit a doctor riding on a battery-operated auto-rickshaw. 

On the way, a speedy auto-rickshaw collided head-on with their vehicle in front of Bauphal Fire Service Station, which left Selim critically injured.

He was then rescued by locals and taken to Bauphal Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physicians declared him dead.

On information, police seized the both vehicles from the scene, said the OC adding that legal actions will be taken in this regard.

NARAYANGANJ: A minor boy was killed after being hit by an auto-rickshaw in the district on Wednesday.
The accident took place at Siddhirganj in the city in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Md Ashraful, 7. He was a student of a local madrasa. 

It was known that a battery-run auto-rickshaw hit the boy in the morning while he was going to the madrasa, which left him critically injured.

Locals then rescued him and took to a hospital, where the on-duty doctor referred him to Dhaka-Medical College Hospital (DMCH) following the deterioration of his condition.

Later on, the child was declared dead by the on-duty doctor at the DMCH.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to the DMCH morgue for an autopsy, said DMCH Police Outpost In-Charge Bacchu Mia.

Siddhirganj PS OC Abu Bakar Siddique confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken if any complaint is received from the deceaseds family members.

GAIBANDHA: Three youths including two brothers were killed after being run over by a truck in Gobindaganj Upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The accident took place on Tuesday afternoon on the Gobindaganj-Dinajpur road in Nasirabad area of Katabari Union under the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Nahid, 19, and his brother Jahid, 20, sons of Ashalat Mia of Nasirabad area, and Shakil, 19, son of Mohammad Ali of the same area.

According to local sources, the three youths were travelling on the same motorcycle from Kayerbhita area of Katabari Union to Nilirmor area in the afternoon. 

As they entered the Gobindaganj-Dinajpur highway, a truck heading towards Bogura from Dinajpur ran over their motorcycle. 

Jahid and Nahid died on the spot, while Shakil succumbed to his injuries at Ghoraghat Upazila Health Complex.

Confirming the incident, Gobindaganj Highway PS OC Mahabur Rahman said, with the help of locals, police have seized the truck from the scene.

The bodies will be handed over to the family members after completion of legal procedures, the OC added.

KULAURA, MOULVIBAZAR: A young man was killed and another injured in a collision between two motorcycles in Kulaura Upazila of the district on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident took place in Khadimpara area under Baramchal Union of the upazila at around 4:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Shahin Ahmed, 30, son of late Abdul Jabbar, a resident of Tukli Village under Hajipur Union in the upazila. He worked as a guard at Bhatera Forest Department.

Police and local sources said Shahin was taking preparation to go to Bhatera from Khadimpara of Baramchal in the afternoon riding on a motorcycle. 

At that time, another motorcycle coming from the opposite direction hit his motorcycle, which left two people including Shahin seriously injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed them to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Shahin dead.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

Kulaura PS Inspector (Investigation) Kyshyannu Marma confirmed the incident.

KISHOREGANJ: A minor boy was killed in a road accident in Hossainpur Upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The accident took place on Hossainpur-Kishoreganj road in front of Hossainpur Fire Service Station in the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Tuhin Mia, 3, a resident of Gavishimul Village under Gafargaon Upazila in Mymensingh District.

It was known that a truck hit the boy in front of Hossainpur Fire Service Station, leaving him dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

However, the law enforcers have seized the truck, and arrested its driver Ariful Islam and his helper Jashim Uddin.

Hossainpur PS OC Nahid Hasan Sumon confirmed the incident, adding that a case was filed in this connection.

DINAJPUR: Two people were killed and another was injured in separate road accidents in Biral and Birampur upazilas of the district in three days.

A man was killed and another injured in a road accident in Biral Upazila on Monday.

The accident took place on the Dinajpur-Bochaganj regional road in Dherapatia area under the upazila at around 1:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Tarek, 35, hailed from Sujanagar Upazila of Pabna District. He was a mango trader by profession and lived in his father-in-laws house in Hosna Kumarpara area under Biral Upazila of Dinajpur.

Quoting locals, Biral PS OC Golam Mawla said Tarek was going to his delivery point riding on the mango-laden truck. 

On the way, its driver lost control over the steering and eventually hit a roadside tree in the area at around 1:30 pm, which left him dead on the spot and another person injured.

The injured was taken to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

The body of the deceased was handed over to the family members as there was no objection from them, the OC added.

Meanwhile, an elderly man was killed after a truck hit him in Birampur Upazila on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Hossain Ali, 70, a resident of Tatokpur Village in the upazila.

It was known that a truck hit Hossain Ali while he was crossing the road in Tatokpur Mor area on the Dinajpur-Gobindaganj highway in the upazila, which left him critically injured. 

He was then rescued and taken to Birampur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

On information, police recovered the body and handed it over to the deceaseds family members without an autopsy.

Birampur PS OC Subrata Kumar Sarker confirmed the incident.

NAOGAON: Two people were killed and five others injured when their human hauler turned turtle and fell into a roadside ditch in Niamatpur Upazila of the district on Monday noon.

The accident took place at around 2:30 pm at Sangsail Bridge area under the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Sharif Uddin, 62, of Damkura Village, and Shamim Reja, 28, of Bangapara Village of the upazila. Both of them were cattle trader by profession.

Quoting locals, Niamatpur PS OC Al Mahmud said the accident occurred when they were heading towards Chhatra Cattle Market to purchase cattle riding on the human hauler. 

On the way, Sharif and Shamim fell prey to a road accident when their vehicle fell into a roadside ditch as its driver lost control over the steering, which left both of them dead on the spot.

On information, police recovered the bodies from the scene and sent those to Niamatpur Upazila Health Complex morgue for an autopsy, the OC added.

LAXMIPUR: A four-year-old girl and her grandfather were killed after a bus hit them in Sadar Upazila of the district on Monday morning.

The accident took place at around 9am in front of Siam Petrol Pump in Purbo Hazir Para area on the Lakshmipur-Dhaka regional highway in the upazila. 

The deceased were identified as Mimi Aktar, and her paternal grandfather Nasir Mollah. Both are hailed from Bhola District. 

Local sources said a bus carrying passengers ran them over in the area while they were crossing the road, leaving Mimi dead on the spot and Nasir Mollah critically injured. 

Nasir Mollah was then rescued and taken to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

The incident happened while they were crossing the road, said Chandragonj Highway PS OC Ruhul Amin.

The bodies have been kept in the hospital morgue for autopsies, the police official added.

HABIGANJ: A pregnant woman was killed and four people were critically injured as a pickup and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway under Shayestaganj Upazila in the district recently.

The accident took place in Sutang Bridge area under the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Mitu Akhter, 24, wife of Swapan Mia, hailed from Madhabpur Upazila of the district.

Local sources said the accident occurred when Mitu along with her relatives were returning home riding on a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a pickup van coming from the opposite direction hit the auto-rickshaw, which left Mitu dead on the spot.

Being informed, Police and fire fighters rushed to the scene and took the injured to Habiganj General Hospital after rescuing them from the scene. 

Of the injured, three critically injured were, later, shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College.
Shayestaganj Highway PS OC Taimur Islam confirmed the incident.

Police seized the vehicles but the drivers, however, managed to flee, the OC added.

MUNSHIGANJ: A mother and her ten-month-old daughter were killed after being hit by a truck on the Sipahipara-Muktarpur road in Rampal Upazila of the district recently.

The accident took place in Shantinagar area of the upazila.

Following the incident, enraged locals set fire to the truck. Later on, police rushed there and bring the situation under control.

The deceased were identified as Lipi Begum, 35, and her ten-month-old daughter Alisha. Both of them were residents of Anandapur Village in Mollakandi Union of Munshiganj Sadar Upazila.

Eyewitnesses said that Lipi Begum was travelling towards Sipahipara riding on a rickshaw along with her daughter Alisha. On the way, a speeding cement-laden truck coming from Muktarpur hit the rickshaw from the opposite direction, causing the mother and daughter to be thrown out of the rickshaw and crushed under the truck. Both of them died on the spot.

Munshiganj Sadar PS OC Aminul Islam confirmed the deaths, adding that police have arrested the truck driver and legal actions were being taken in this regard.

RAJBARI: Three people including a minor child were killed in separate road accidents in Goalanda and Kalukhali upazilas of the district recently.

A six-year-old girl was killed after an auto-rickshaw hit her in Goalanda Upazila.

The deceased was identified as Nusrat Jazan, daughter of expatriate Bachchu Molla, a resident of Volai Matobbor Para under Uzancar Union in the upazila.  

The accident happened in the new bridge area under Uzancar Union in the upazila.
 
The deceaseds grandmother said that an auto-rickshaw ran her over while she was crossing the road after buying biscuits from a shop near her house, which left her critically injured.

Locals then rescued her and took to Goalanda Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the girl dead. 

Dr Jahangir Hossain, physician of Goalanda Upazila Health Complex, confirmed the incident, adding that the child had died before being taken to the hospital. 

Meanwhile, two people were killed after a truck hit another fruits-laden one in Kalukhali Upazila of the district.

The deceased were identified as Liton Hossain, 35, of Kushtia; and Anisur, 35, of Rajshahi. Both were the helpers of the two trucks.

According to local people, the helper of a mango-laden truck was repairing the vehicle on the Rajbari-Kushtia regional road as it suddenly went out of order. 

A Kushtia-bound another truck hit the standing one from behind while trying to overtake it, leaving Anisur dead on the spot and Liton critically injured.

Then, locals rushed him to Kalukhali Upazila Health Complex. But, later, Liton was shifted to Kushtia Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

The drivers, however, managed to flee the scene.

Police are trying to arrest them, said Pangsha Highway PS OC Harun-or-Rashid.

BARISHAL: An elderly man was killed after being hit by an easy-bike in Agailjhara Upazila of the district recently.

The accident took place in Fullashree Bus Stand area of the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Harun Bepari, 60, son of late Chhabed Bepari, a resident of the area.
It was known that an easy-bike hit Harun in the area while he was crossing the road, which left him seriously injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed to Agailjhara Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
