Job aspirants and students who have been demanding abolition of quotas, barring a maximum 5 per cent for backward communities, will march towards the Bangabhaban today and hand over a memorandum to the President to realise their demand.

The march will begin at 11:00am from in front of the Dhaka University (DU) Central Library, said coordinators of the Anti-discriminatory Student Movement at a press conference on the DU campus on Saturday.

Simultaneously, students of other educational institutions across the country will organise marches to their respective district administration offices and hand over memorandums describing their one-point demand.

The protesters demanded the national parliament pass a law, proposing a maximum of 5 per cent quota in government jobs for the children of freedom fighters, backward communities and persons with physical disabilities.

From the press conference, the protesters gave 24-hour ultimatum to the law enforcers to withdraw the case filed against the protesting students on charges of vandalising police vehicles, assaulting police officers, and attacking policemen during the ongoing quota reform movement.

Khalilur Rahman, a driver from the transport section of Rajarbagh Police Lines, filed the case on charges of vandalising police vehicles, assaulting police officers, and attacking policemen with Shahbagh Police Station on Friday. Many unidentified students were accused in the case.

Sarjis Alamm, one of the coordinators, said, "around 30 students were injured at Cumilla University, we have visited them, and met with district police.

They helped us. But if we are provoked or misled, it will not yield any good results. We hope Cumilla University, police and students will work together."

"We are not responsible for the field we are in. Its the governments responsibility. If it accepts our demand, we will withdraw the movement," Sarjis said.

Coordinator Asif Mahmud, said, "On July 11, we announced a peaceful programme. But in various places, the police, administration, and government-backed student organisation attacked us. Students were fired upon at Comilla University and students of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University were baton-charged."

"We have coordinated with the police for a long time to conduct the movement smoothly. No student has sparked this agitation or created any problem. Instead, after the Home Ministers statement, the police and government-backed student organisation attacked us." Asif said.

He claimed the case filed against the protesters was false and demanded immediate withdrawal of the case.

"We are carrying out the movement peacefully. Yet, police, university administration, and government-backed student organisation are unitedly conspiring against us. If any incident occurs, we will not be responsible, said another coordinator Nahid Islam.

Hasnat Abdullah said, "Many view our Bangla Blockade as suffering. We want to say that before giving birth to a child, a mother has to endure pain.

This suffering is just like that. We are fighting to ensure merit-based recruitment system in government jobs."

Job aspirants and students of different universities and colleges across the country have been demonstrating by blocking highways and railways since July 1, to press home their demand of introduction of merit-based recruitment and reformation of quotas in government jobs.
