Police presented the couple to a court on Sunday seeking a seven-day remand on charges of torturing their 10-year-old domestic worker on accusations of theft on Sunday.

After hearing, the court sent Qazi Md Ismail Hossain, 31, residential medical officer at Barguna Sadar Hospital, to jail and granted one-day remand for his wife Mahmuda Khatun Parashmani, 26.
Savar Model Police Station sub-inspector and the investigating officer of the case Hasan Sikder confirmed the development around 5pm on Sunday.

Earlier, on Saturday, the couple was detained after the victim's mother, garment worker Kulsum Begum, filed a complaint with Savar Model Police Station.

According to the victim, she was working at that house for about a year. In the beginning, the accused used to love her, but after some days they started beating her, accusing of stealing.

Her mother Kulsum said, "The couple took my daughter to their house one year ago saying that she will get proper education and support. They used to keep her in their house in Barguna and Savar."

"Two days ago, the doctor's wife called me to her house. When I went there, she told me that my daughter had stolen their gold chain, mobile, and money. Later, they handed over my girl to me," she said.

The mother further said that when she returned home from work that night, her daughter informed about the incident of torture and she saw the injury marks on her body.

"That night, I admitted my daughter to a hospital. I want justice for the torture of my child," she added.

Savar Upazila Health and Family Planning officer Dr Sayemul Huda said they found torture marks on the child's body.

"We suspect the child was tortured with a knife and heavy objects," said the doctor.
