At least five students were injured in an attack allegedly carried out by activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (
BCL) men in
Jhenaidah on Tuesday morning.
The attack took place around 11.30am at Wazir Ali School and College ground in the city.
However, the identities of the injured could not be ascertained immediately.
According to eyewitnesses and students, as part of the anti-quota movement, the students gathered at Wazir Ali school ground to hold a
protest march against the
quota reinstatement. At that time, a procession led by District Chhatra League General Secretary Al Imran from Payra Chatwar area of the city attacked the agitating students with iron-rods, sticks, and pipes. They beat the students with the weapons and took away the banners.
"At least five protestors sustained critical injuries during the attack," they said.
Since the incident, a tense situation has been prevailing in the area.
Confirming the matter, Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Shahin Uddin said on information, police rushed there and brought the situation under control as of 1:30pm.
Additional police forces were deployed in the area, added the OC.
