Chilli selling at Tk 240 kg in Dinajpur

DINAJPUR, July 16: Per kilogram (KG) chilli price has been increased by Tk 80 at different haats and bazaars in the district in a week.

Before one week, per kg chilli was selling at Tk 150. At present, per kg chilli is selling at Tk 240.
 
According to local sources, chilli fields got damaged due to heavy rainfall in the last week.

Traders in Bahadur Bazar, the biggest kitchen market in the district, and in different upazila bazaars, said, because of the damage by rain, the supply of chilli has decreased; that is why, the chilli price has increased.

A visit on Monday to Bahadur Bazar, Suihari Bazar, Ramnagar Bazar, Upashahor Bazar, and Pulhat Bazar found this picture.

Imported chilli of India is making on impact on the market price in Dinajpur as the Indian chilli is sent to Dhaka and other districts. 

Along with chilli, spices and vegetable prices have also increased in Dinajpur. At present, per kg onion is selling at Tk 110.
General people are facing disarray due to the price hikes of chilli, spices and vegetables.

A customer Lutfor Rahman who came to Bahadur Bazar on Monday morning said, "I have purchased 100gram of chilli instead of 250gram before due to the price hike."

"It will be difficult for general people like us to afford if the price trend continues," he added.

Chilli price hike was reported in Chirirbandar, Beerganj, Birampur, and Nawabganj upazilas.

A trader Kuddus Ali at Birampur Bazar said, "Due to damage of chilli, we are bringing chilli from the outside."

Another Sahraf Ali at Bahadur Bazar said, "We are purchasing at higher price and selling at higher price."

A farmer Jonab Ali of Madirahat Village in Fulbari Upazila said, "I cultivated chilli on 10 kathas of land; heat after the rain damaged my field; plants died; and after 15 days I could have lifted only 20 kg of chilli; I suffered loss." 

Another Rashidul Islam of Ulipur Village in Sadar Upazila said, "I cultivated chilli on 50 decimals of land at Tk 1,00,000; I could have lifted  only 40kg of chilli from 1,000 plants; I sold these at Tk 210 per kg; I counted loss." 

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension Nurujjaman said, this year chilli was cultivated on 962 hectares (ha) of land; the chilli production was 1,732 metric tons against last years 1,782 mt from 990 ha.

Senior Agriculture Marketing Officer in Dinajpur Rabiul Hasan said, continuous rain caused less yielding to chilli; that is why chilli price is increasing day by day.
